Last week, at The Video Game Awards, Troy Baker was one of the many guest presenters. A lot of people in attendance knew him from at least a couple of games, or a television show. However, the extent of his work might not be as well-known as deserved.
Baker has given a voice to so many characters in video games that have seen overwhelming success, both as a lead and secondary character, becoming something of a legend at the age of 39. Starting his career in 1989, the list of roles he's taken is overwhelming. If you don't recognize his name, you might be amazed at how many times you've heard his voice in your gaming career.
Or course, he didn't get lead roles right out of the gate; his first endeavor in the world of video games was in 2003 when he voiced the Outlaw Alchemist in "Full Metal Alchemist and the Broken Angel."
A year later, he voiced two parts in "Bloodrayne 2": Severin and Kagan. In 2005, Baker landed a more substantial roll as Sgt. Matt Baker in "Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30" and "Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood," as well as a spot in "Aeon Flux" as Trevor Goodchild, Keller and Svengali.
In 2007, Baker voiced Axe in "Golden Axe: Beast Rider." He also provided a voice to the soldiers in "Metroid Prime 3: Corruption," and contributed to "Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation" and "Operation Darkness" as well as reprising the role of Sgt. Matt Baker. Baker rounded out the year voicing Sol Badguy in "Guilty Gear 2: Overture" and Bryan Fury in "Tekken 6."
As the years progressed, Baker only got busier, landing 12 jobs in the video game industry in 2008 including: "Space Siege," "Tales of Vesperia," "Quantum of Solace," and "Resistance 2."
Finally, in 2009, Baker got his big break with "Red Faction Guerrilla" voicing protagonist Alec Mason. Other highlights of that year include Grimer in "Ghostbusters," as well as roles in "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" and "Final Fantasy XIII."
In 2010, Baker got a chance to provide the voice to a dragon as Abaddon in "Darksiders." Other games Baker was involved in that year include "Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker," "Transformers: War for Cybertron," "Singularity," "Quantum Theory," "Mafia II," and "Fable III."
Baker was becoming a busy man.
In 2011, Baker played protagonist Vincent Brooks in "Catherine," Ryu Hayabusa in "Dead or Alive Dimensions," and Tim Drake, Robin, and Harvey Dent in "Batman: Arkham City." Baker also provided the vocals for the main character in "Saints Row: The Third" and Zenith in "Star Wars: The Old Republic."
In 2012, Baker played the assassin Kai Leng in "Mass Effect 3." In "Ninja Gaiden 3," Baker reprised his role as Ryu Hayabusa. In "Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes," Baker played Batman, Two-Face and Sinestro. In "Persona 4," Baker played Kanji Tatsumi. Though he couldn't reprise his role as Abaddon in "Darksiders II," Baker did play Draven, The Sleeping Warden and The Phariseer in "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron," Jazz, Jetfire, and Kickback.
Once again, in "Dead or Alive 5," Ryu Hayabusa was voiced by Baker. And in "Resident Evil 6," he played the hulking Jake Muller.
In 2013, Baker landed one of his biggest roles as Bokker Dewitt in "Bioshock Infinite." He also reprised Sinestro in "Injustice: Gods Among Us."
As if playing the protagonist of one AAA title wasn't enough, Baker was also hired to play Joel, the protagonist of "The Last of Us."
To round out his year, Baker was given the extraordinary task of filling the shoes of the great Mark Hamill as The Joker in "Batman Arkham Origins," a job that he handled magnificently. In just a decade, Troy Baker had gone from a nobody, taking whatever job he could get, to the go-to guy in video game voice acting.
The major roles continued in 2014 as Baker was recruited to play Delsin Rowe, protagonist of "Infamous: Second Son."
Baker then made the transition to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien as Talion in "Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor."
From Middle-earth to the futuristic war zones of "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare," Baker played protagonist Jack Mitchell.
That same year, Baker played Pagan Min, the antagonist of "Far Cry 4."
In 2015 Baker's most notable role was in "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain," in which he played Ocelot.
Needless to say, Troy Baker is a hard worker and a huge part of the video game industry. Next year, Baker will be featured in yet another blockbuster as Samuel Drake, Nathan Drake's older brother in "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."
Believe it or not, this is only a partial list of his work in video games and only a fraction of a percent of his work as a voice actor. The next time you're playing a game, and one of the character's voices strikes a friendly chord in your ear, look up the actor; chances are it's Troy Baker.
