If you follow my articles, you know that I have developed a niche for all natural beauty products. You can check out my article about essential oils, or about the vegan beauty box, Petit Vour, that I'm subscribed to. But one natural beauty product that I was refusing to try was deodorant.
Women everywhere are making the switch to natural deodorants. It is believed that the aluminum found in many deodorants and antiperspirants can cause breast cancer, and that they prevent the release of toxins in our body.
I think I was mainly afraid to try a natural deodorant because I was scared to smell. I usually use Dove deodorant, and I apply once in the morning and occasionally once throughout the day if I had sweat a lot. I never worried about if my armpits smelled or not.
In this month's (September) Petit Vour box, I received a full size sample of Meow Meow Tweet's Deodorant Cream, baking soda free, in the scent 'Grapefruit'. It looks like this:
And because it was baking soda free, it has a creamy consistency that looks like this:
I was very interested by this product. It smelt incredible, and made my skin feel smooth and soft when I swatched it against my hand. The full size sample costs $14 for 2.4 oz of product, which you only use a pea size amount of on each armpit.
I decided that I would use this for a week, since it was one of the only natural beauty products that I haven't given a try.
On my first day of trying this product out, I wore a black t shirt. I applied the cream deodorant, and then threw my t shirt on. I immediately realized that my shirt had grazed under my pits, and I felt horrified as I remembered all the shirts I had to wash last minute because of traditional deodorant stains. I was relieved as I looked in the mirror and saw no such stain, just a little discoloration that I brushed off with a towel.
For the first few days of my little experiment, I felt excited to get feedback on how great I smelled, or if they noticed a difference in my overall physique. However, that wasn't the case. Nobody seemed the notice at all, actually, which is good news considering my chronic fear of smelling bad.
As pleasant as the scent was, it did seem to fade throughout the day, more than a regular deodorant does. I found myself reapplying proactively about three times a day, to ensure that I wasn't going to have a B.O. crisis.
However, my deodorant was put to the test on a hot Saturday night at CitiField, where I wore a fitted t-shirt and my grapefruit deodorant. I had forgotten to reapply before we left, and I found myself sweating bullets on the crowded subway trains, and in the stuffy stands of CitiField. By the time I left the game, I couldn't help but lift my arm and take a whiff. It was pretty bad. Not awful, but I definitely could have smelt better if I was using a traditional deodorant.
Overall, I had a positive experience with my natural deodorant. With light exercise and minimal sweating, I didn't have much of an issue. However, if I had worked out more this week or if the weather was very hot, I'd probably be missing my traditional deodorant a little more.
For now, I'm going to use my natural deodorant and occasionally use Dove deodorant on days that I sweat the most. I would highly recommend this brand specifically, as they are cruelty-free, crafted by hand, and non-toxic.
