Ever since I was a little kid, Halloween has been my favorite holiday. I have dressed up spectacularly every year and every year I have gone trick or treating. Yes, you read that right. Every single year. I am 18 years old. I have never been denied candy because I am "too old" to go trick-or-treating. Why do so many people want to ruin the holiday by telling people they can't trick-or-treat?
At 18 years old, you may be an "adult" but really the only thing we can do is buy cigarettes and dry ice. How would we have fun on Halloween? Dress up and have a dance party? Trick-or-treating is so much fun. You get a chance to show off your costume to everyone around and get free candy. As a broke college kid, I'll take anything free I can get. We are a pretty good audience to give the apples and juice boxes to, especially since we basically live off of Lunchables and Ramen Noodles.
Denying people their opportunity to have fun is awful. It isn't like it is against the law to trick-or-treat after you're 16. Why ruin the fun for the older teenagers? Its like when middle-aged people go to a club, are they told to leave because they are "too old" to be there? No, they are accepted into the environment just like the people in their mid-20s.
Also, if the older teenagers are denied their candy, why are you giving candy to the 6-month old? Obviously they aren't going to be eating the candy. Knowingly giving candy to people in their 30s, just because they have a baby is the exact same thing as giving candy to people my age. They are "too old" to go trick-or-treating, yet, they are still getting the candy from their baby and we are being denied our right to get free mini kit kats.
All in all- why deny people a chance to be kids again? College is hard. Losing friends, leaving your parents, doing your own laundry... its a big transition for teenagers to do. Giving us one night to walk around and get candy in costumes is something we have earned. I will be going trick-or-treating this year in my homemade Hillary Clinton costume. Try to tell me I'm too old, I dare you.
