A Tribute to Sorority Sweethearts: Thank You

Every year, most sororities elect men to be their chapter's "sweetheart." Sometimes it's just one man that earns the title, but some sororities choose a couple to have as sweethearts. You could say his role is kind of like an older brother to the women. He's the one you call when you need help with anything. Whether it's to change your tire, walk you home, or someone to vent to, your sweetheart is the guy to call.

These men truly are amazing and sometimes I feel like they really don't know how much we appreciate everything they do for us. With that being said, sweethearts, here is our "thank you."

Thank you for always having our best interest in mind.

You will tell us what we should do when we come to you for advice. This could be about school, my future, boy problems, or anything else that we aren't sure about. You keep it real and you want what is best for us. You honestly believe that you represent the best sorority on campus and you want to see us succeed. We love you for that.

Thank you for dealing with the crazy side no one else sees.

You have seen all of us at our best, and some of us at our absolute worst. We could be going insane, storm off down the street at 3 AM and you'd chase after us. You would calm us down and say whatever we're dealing with isn't worth it because we deserve so much better. We love you SO much for that.

Thank you for the cookies.

Cookies, brownies, candy, you name it. We stress about the calories we eat, but you say we deserve a break and you want us to treat ourselves to some sweets every now and then. The second our group message says, "Sweetheart brought food. It's in the kitchen," a herd comes running down the stairs and it's a fight to the finish. We love you for that.

Thank you for knowing what to say.

When we're having that mental breakdown or when we don't know what we want, whatever you say to us is... brilliant. How do you honestly know the right thing to say to us? It's like a superpower you guys have. It always makes sense and it's always what we need to hear. We love you for that.

Thank you for taking cute pics.

...even if it takes a million tries to make our "candid" actually look believable.

Thank you for representing us.

We wear our letters proudly. We stand for incredible values and represent our chapter to the best of our ability. By giving you the title of our sweetheart, you hold a place in our hearts, too. We believe that you have these same standards in your life and that's why we decided that you would be the best representative as our sorority's sweetheart. We love you for that.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
