Less than a week ago, the baseball world was in shock.
I remember waking up Sunday morning and the first thing I did was look at my phone as usual. I noticed a lot of ESPN, Bleacher Report, and MLB notifications on my phone. Then I saw it. Josè Fernández was on every notification and I was in disbelief that something so horrific could happen to such a great player and person.
Josè was one of my favorite baseball players. He had love for the game. That is rare in baseball today. Players are worried about being paid, but not Josè. He was in all of the senses of the word incredible both on and off the field.
I remember watching a video months ago about his story and how he had to leave his family behind in Cuba to chase his dreams. In the video, he said that his grandmother had a lasting impact on him. Unfortunately she was in Cuba, and he didn't know that she was on her way to see him. Then she appeared and his smile was so intoxicating. I couldn't help but smile. But then over this week the video was reshared and posted. I watched it again and this time it had a different impact on me. I thought to myself, how could such a great person be taken away in a matter of seconds? How could someone so young be taken away from us with so much to look forward to in life?
I don't have an answer for that. The only thing I can say is that he was more than just a baseball player. He was a person who had a lasting impact on his fans, his teammates, and everyone around him.
All over baseball, teams were celebrating a life, not mourning a death. The Marlins celebrated him by the whole team wearing his number one last time.
Rest in peace, Josè
