Last week was something for the books wasn't?
We started the week off by electing Donald Trump as the President of the United States which was not ideal. The day after, people across the country were scared and uncertain of the results. This manifested itself in protests, social media posts, and acts of violence from both sides. The country is not in a good place right now; if anything, it is more divided than ever.
Despite these turbulent times, there was one thing that brightened my day as soon as I saw it on my phone. The new Tribe Called Quest album, "We got it from Here...Thank You 4 Your Service", came out on Thursday night and, for me, at least, the healing began. I had heard that it was coming out a few weeks ago but with everything else going on it was easy to forget about. Hearing Q-Tip's familiar and impeccable flow reminded me of simpler times as a kid, and not the current adult living in this uncertain present. The first song on the album was called "We the People...", and for the first time this week, I felt happy.
Although not primarily a political group, Tribe has had a history of commenting on current events in their songs dating back to their debut. So you could definitely expect something, especially with this being their last album. The artists featured also echo these political leanings with appearances by Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Kanye West and Anderson Paak. Hearing these familiar voices gives me a little hope that we can still be strong and overcome this uncertainty.
So, if you're bummed out about the election, school, or whatever else, listen to this album and let yourself enjoy something for a little bit. As my man President Obama said on Wednesday, "The sun will rise in the morning", and when you wake up give this a listen.
