Trends of 2013: The Good, The Bad, and The Absolutely Heinous

I cannot help but worry what future generations are going to think of the fashion trends that 2013 carried in. Although the bad, and not to mention the absolutely heinous, trends are more memorable, there were some awe-inspiring trends that have a solid chance at outweighing the bad.

Let’s start with the good trendsthe stuff we want to look back at in the same way we look back at 90’s fashion (hopefully joy and good memories flood your mind). 2013 actually reflected a few styles that were popular in the 90’s, which is one of the many reasons why I liked these next three trends so much. Keep in mind that when I am reflecting on the styles that I think were the best in 2013, my favorable opinion only applies to those who did not push them too far (I’m looking at you Miley Cyrus).

1. Faux leather over everything: Honestly, I think this is the one trend that cannot go wrong. Whether it is a full leather ensemble or a piece that has a few leather accents, it has this look to it that just screams “Look at me, I know I look good." And as I always like to say: look good, feel good, am I right?

2. Colored pants: These are such a great addition to any outfit for every season. They became a trend because of their versatility in material and style.

3. Black and white: You’re probably thinking: when has black and white not been in style? True, but 2013 turned it from a ‘classic’ look to something that plays both ends of the spectrum, from an edgy look to a sophisticated look.

Dare I even write about the bad of 2013…Narrowing it down to three was more of a struggle than you can imagine! These next three items were luckily trends that the majority of the world was smart enough not to try; only a very very very select few pulled these styles off.

1. Sheer shirts: SO OVER IT. Can we reflect on the fact that for the past year we have been paying full price for shirts that cost next to nothing to make and only flatter our bodies when layered with another shirt underneath? This is a genius ploy by retailers to get us trend-following consumers to buy not one but two shirts. We’ve clearly been tricked and we must make it stop.

2. Short hair: By ‘short hair’, I mean buzz cut on a select area of the head short or so short you can’t style it without gel. Any trend that Britney Spears tried to start circa 2007 in a head-shaving downward spiral, and Miley Cyrus successfully continued HAS to be bad. I’ve had short hair for about 5 years now, and I love it. It’s a great change when you go from long luscious locks to short flirty hair. But going from that luscious, beautiful hair to ‘as close as you can get without cutting the scalp’ is just a no.

3. Hide-a-wedge sneakers: Sneakers are meant for athletic purposes--you know, the shoes you tie up when you’re gearing up to go running (whether it is miles or errands). Wedges were created to make your legs look sexy or to dress up an outfit, give a girl some height while making her look hot. The two should stay separated, that’s all I’m trying to say.

I wanted to save the Absolutely Heinous category for those looks that have the potential for looking really great, but not everyone knows quite how to do them. They will continue into 2014, hopefully giving people more time to get them right.

1. Pattern mixing: You basically have to be really cool (worldwide, not just when your mom is trying to make you feel better) to even think about making this work. For that same reason, not many people do. I urge you to take caution in looking this trend up: headaches may occur.

2. High-waisted anything: This is a trend that A LOT of people tried to make happen. Although the look is typically cute, it has to be worn with the right top or it can make your body look like it does in a clown mirror. I put all responsibility into the hands of retailers on this one...come on, help us help you.

3. Crop tops: Saving the best for last! An obvious huge trend of the year, but I am putting it in the absolutely heinous category until the world learns how to wear them right. Paired with high-wasted bottoms, crop tops are cute and petite little items. We run into problems when these cute and petite tops are paired with low-rise bottoms, because then they morph into tiny and heinous.

Trend talk: 2013 provided us with hilarious memories hidden in complicated looks. I’m hoping 2014 gifts us with the guidelines to make them look right.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.
