Treat Yourself

Because, why not?

15
Treat Yourself

We often get so caught up in the world around us, so concerned about the people beside us, so stuck in the busy routines of our long days, I think, that we so frequently forget to think of the most important thing: you.

Think of the last time you thought of a fun thing to do but pushed it away because you didn't have the time. Or the last time you wanted to buy something you loved but convinced yourself to walk out of the store empty handed. The last time you gave up your free time to help someone else.

Now, think of the last time you did something for yourself, solely because you wanted to. If you can't, then chances are it's been awhile since you treated yourself.

This list is for you.

1. Take a walk in a beautiful place. Not only is this good for your body, its good for your mind. Focusing on what is around you will get your mind off other things you may be stressing about.

2. Paint your nails. If you're really feeling extra generous then go out and buy a new color.

3. Watch a movie or binge watch your favorite show, and -- the really important part is that you cannot feel guilty about it.

4. Explore that place in town you've been meaning to go to. Make reservations at that restaurant you've been saying you have to try for six months now.

5. Color, paint, craft something, create.

6. Make yourself a smoothie -- or an ice cream sundae. You pick!

7. Take a nap.

8. Take some time to read that book you have been eyeing. If this seems like too daunting of a task for you to commit to, at the very least go walk around a book store.

9. Go to a cycling class, yoga class, or whatever kind of class floats your boat. These are centered all around you and your mind and body. These instructors work wonders. I swear they are therapists in their own way.

10. Take a bubble bath. Your inner child will be ecstatic.

11. Journal. Write your thoughts down.

12. Indulge in Pinterest. Looking at pretty pictures doesn't solve your problems, but it also never created any.

13. Take extra time on your hair or makeup. Wear the outfit that makes you feel the most confident. Play music while you get ready, too. Enjoy the process.

14. Cook your favorite meal.

15. Sit and watch the sunset. Or, if you have to be up early, the sunrise. Stargaze. Appreciate the beauty around you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
