Treat Yo' Self In The Twin Cities

Sometimes you just gotta treat yourself.

We've all had those days. Maybe you got into a fight with your parent or you had a rough day at work. Either way, we all know what it's like to have bad days. And, on those days, it can feel like we are only born to suffer.

Sometimes, however, these days can be remedied. Sometimes, all we need to feel better is a little self care (if you don't know what this means, or how to do it, I wrote my first article on this - and yeah, there's typos, I'm only human). Sometimes, you gotta treat yourself, and in this case, literally.

If you are someone who eats delicious, sugary sweets, I might have the perfect list for you to satisfy your desire to treat yourself to something edible and unhealthy. This week, I want to recommend some of my favorite places in the Twin Cities for your daily dose of desserts. Here are my favorites in no particular order:

Rita's Italian Ice

This place has become one of my favorite places to visit this summer. They have Italian ice (of course) and frozen custard which can be ordered separately or put together to create the world's most glorious mix of creaminess and ice. One bite and you'll be licking your cup clean. Seriously, this place is a game changer.

Nothing Bundt Cakes

Okay, so, whenever I walk into this store, I always think of this scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding:

Anyway, all jokes aside, this place is so rad. You know how sometimes you just want cake but cannot eat an entire by yourself? (CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.) Well, this place is perfect for buying miniature cakes that you can hide in your room and binge on without feeling too guilty. Seriously, though, they have multiple sizes of bundt cake, ranging from cupcake sizes to full size cakes. The flavor selection is so good, as they have fresh flavors like lemon and classic ones like red velvet. BONUS: these cakes are the perfect texture- soft and not too dry!

Nadia Cakes

If you like to watch the Food Network, you might recognize these cupcakes as having won Cupcake Wars a few years ago. Fun fact: these cupcakes definitely deserved to win. Along with your typical cupcake varieties, there are new flavors every day of the month. Every time I go, there is always something new to try.

Izzy's Ice Cream

There's no going wrong with delicious ice cream and sorbet and Izzy's has been named one of the best in the Twin Cities. They have an option for adding a tiny scoop of ice cream on whatever you order called an "izzy scoop". Seriously, what are you waiting for?

Sebastian Joe's Ice Cream Cafe

This is another cool ice cream joint in the city I love. The atmosphere is friendly and reminds me that Minnesota is my home, as the interior walls are lined with news clippings from local papers and local art.

Honey & Mackie's

I just discovered this hidden gem. This place is a family-owned store that carries ice cream AND french fries. Yeah, you read that right. I've only had the pleasure of enjoying their ice cream, but even that is enough for me to want to return. Their monthly special for August is mini donut. If you go, try the "Golden" ice cream. It is, well, golden.

YoYo Donuts & Coffee Bar

If you dig donuts, YoYo Donuts is calling your name. This place is so cool. They also sell ice cream, but the donuts are the main attraction, and for good reason. I had their s'mores donut and I don't think I've ever had a chocolate-marshmallow treat that delicious before. Run, don't walk there.

Glam Doll Donuts

Mix together a 50's diner and a cafe and you get the Glam Doll aesthetic. If you want your donuts as glamorous as you are, look no further. This is such a cool place to spend your time and money.

On days where nothing seems to go right and you can't seem to win, a little treat might be what is needed to make you feel better in a moment. Although a sugary sweet is not going to solve your problems, sometimes it's enough to reward yourself for surviving a tough day. Sometimes, it is just what you need. Sometimes, you can have your cake and eat it too.

28 Daily Thoughts of College Students

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
