Many valuable life lessons can be learned from NBC's television show "Parks and Recreation."
A huge lesson comes from characters Donna and Tom urging you to "treat yo self" -- where one day of the year they spend money on lavish items and expenses they might not normally entertain the idea of. It is a day filled with enjoyment and wish fulfillment.
I think we all should follow Donna and Toms lead and "treat yo self" more than just once a year and as often as we desire:
1. Spending money on things that you want and that will make you happy -- is an investment
I don't mean to sound like a shopaholic here... money won't buy you happiness, but if there is something such as a specific purse or watch that you have been wanting for a while -- "treat yo self." You've earned it. Every time you wear that item or use that product, you'll feel happy.
2. It feels nice to be nice to yourself
What better way to reward yourself for being a great and upstanding citizen in society than by buying that jacket you want from Nasty Gal? That felt good.
3. Treating others is nice, too
How great does it feel to give someone special a sentimental gift? It's nice to spoil those we love. Treat them too!
4. Don't buy things that you don't need
Just because you're in the mood to spend some quality time on yourself doesn't mean you should buy useless and frivolous things. "Treat yo self" to the important things.
5. "Treat Yo Self" doesn't have to involve money
Sometimes all it takes to brighten a tough week is some quiet alone time. You don't have to take yourself shopping every time you feel a little down, try watching one of your favorite movies or reading a good book. "Treat yo self" to some personal time.
So don't be afraid to spoil yourself -- you deserve it.
