Treat Yo' Self

The importance of having "me" time.

Everybody knows, even if only theoretically, the importance of treating yourself. This summer was definitely a busy one and I may have neglected to treat myself. By the time I finished my summer internship, my back felt tight, tense and uncomfortable, and my skin looked dull and worn down. I could have tried an at-home solution but I thought to myself "what the heck, I might as well take a day for me and treat myself." And that’s how I ended up at my first spa day.

First on my agenda was a facial. It was my first time and I was quite nervous. Truth be told, although I love summer, this weird sporadic weather had taken a toll on my skin and I was looking to get my youthful (lol) glow back. It is safe to say that this experience was one of the most relaxing 30 minutes of my life. The room was warm and inviting. It smelled of lavender and the lights were dimmed. I could feel some of my anxiety shed away as my cosmetologist started to walk me through my facial. She would cleanse, exfoliate, tone, massage and moisturize my face after she examined it. Surprisingly, having someone rub your face for 30 minutes wasn’t awkward at all. I felt comfortable. I was honestly in love by the end of the session. My face wasn’t dull anymore and she walked me through some products that would be good for my face. She also showed me how to start slowly implementing a beauty routine. Trust me, it’s not as easy as it sounds. My facial was wonderful and I was so delighted with my decision to try one.

Next was a back massage. I have a lot of tension in my back because off stress (and mostly because I don’t sit properly due to my back posture). The first thing I learned was that massages hurt (sometimes)! But this hurt was a good hurt (note: at any time I could have stopped the masseuse and asked for a lighter massage). However, I could feel the knots being kneaded out of my back with every pop. My massage was not as relaxing as my facial but it was necessary to get my back back in order.

After my treatments I relaxed in the lounges of the spa. They had snacks, relaxing music, and drinks. I stayed there for a while reflecting on my summer and my treatments. I thoroughly enjoyed both treatments and I will definitely go back to get more facials. Although I spend practically the whole day there it was definitely worth it for me. In the words of Tom and Donna, sometimes you just have to “treat yo self.”

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
