What's up foodies, on this trip, we'll be traveling to the capital of The Netherlands, Amsterdam. This city is full of art, culture, and fun. There are so many fun/interesting museums and cycling tours to go on. But when in Amsterdam, make sure you check out the street markets. Here is where you will find all the little nick-nacks, souvenirs, and most importantly, street food. In this city, street food is not hard to find, if anything, it's the most popular way to dine.
Stroopwafel
One thing you have to try is their Stroopwafels. The cookies are made fresh right after you order. A stroopwafel is a wafer cookie that is cut in half to create two thin layers. The two layers are joined by a caramel filling. Depending on the location you purchase your stroopwafel at, you can choose to top it with melted chocolate and many kinds of toppings like walnuts, Smarties, and coconut flakes. Now, this snack is a little messy because you have to eat it by hand (in the street) but the warm cookie with caramel fills you up. Now this treat can become a favorite, so if you want to take some home, don't worry! Almost every market in town sells stroopwafels in packaging. These cookies will last for weeks.
Oorlog French Fries
Now if you're looking for something salty, Oorlog French Fries are a delicious way to go. In a paper cone, french fries topped with mayo, raw onions (if you'd like), and Oorlog sauce. This sauce is a spicy mix of peanuts, turmeric, ginger, and other spicy. These fries are super crispy and when topped with the sauce making them taste even better.
Bitterballen
Bitterballen can be found in both restaurants and on the street, but where ever you decide to eat them, they are a perfect snack. This little snack is a ground beef croquette platter served with mustered. These little things are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The salty snack is great with a Dutch beer (of course, if you're of age).
Poffertjes
Poffertjes are mini Dutch Pancakes. They are usually covered in syrup and powdered sugar. Depending on where you're dining, you can order these tiny sweets with many different toppings. Various fruits like strawberries, bananas, and berries are popular when ordering Poffertjes, but keeping it plain and simple will satisfy your sweet tooth.
Mint Tea
Mint tea is very popular in Amsterdam. It goes very nicely with stroopwafels or Poffertjes (or mini pancakes). A common mistake though is it is not tea. "Mint tea" is a hot infusion of mint. This hot drink is very relaxing and delicious after (or during) any meal. The best part? When you order mint tea at a cafe, it usually comes with a little stroopwafel on the side.
After walking around a site seeing all day long, you're gonna get hungry, but don't you worry, there are many street food vendors on evevry corner. If anything, you might be too full to walk around!
Make sure you check out these treats when in Amsterdam and as the Dutch say, vaarwel!
