Traveling Abroad On A Budget

Want to travel the world, but don’t think that you can afford it? With a little bit of research and planning, you can do it on a college budget.

Traveling abroad is something that everyone should try and experience. Traveling opens your eyes, mind, and heart to the many different and diverse cultures of the world. If you want to travel, do not make money an excuse to not do it.

There are a variety of options that you have to explore from, but for this article I will focus on two: Hostels and Workaway. For those of you are unfamiliar with either of these, I hope to enlighten you on the possibilities that you have.

Hostels

Many people cringe when they hear the word “Hostel” like it is something that we should fear. The problem with hostels is that they have a bad reputation. Modern hostels are very well-managed and are available at decent rates for budget travelers.

My mind changed instantly about Hostels when I visited the site Hostelworld.com. This site made searching for hostels easy and convenient. They also have an excellent review and rating system in place to get a good idea of where you are staying and what to expect.

Every country runs hostels a little differently. When you search your destination of choice, you have the ability to filter specifications about your stay. This allows for you to narrow down your search and find the best hostel for you buck.

The review section is also very helpful. It helped calm my nerves about hostels all together. Seeing that other reputable travelers have stayed there and rated the hostel make it more appealing of a destination.

Visit www.hostelworld.com for more information.

Workaway

Workaway is more unknown to anyone who hasn’t heard about it from a friend or done a good bit of research on traveling on a budget. Workaway is unique in that if offers you free room and board with a host of your choice, in exchange for labor.

At first, when I heard about Workaway, I was a little skeptical. I imagined a whole variety of situations and bad thing that could happen. Then, I visited the site, talked to people who have done it, and realized that this is a legitimate and safe way to travel and explore a new culture.

The advantage of using Workaway is that you get to stay with a host that is a local and knows the lay of the land. They can offer you suggestions and help you feel at home in a new environment. Workaway offers you the opportunity to not only visit a new place, but enrich yourself in a culture. This unique opportunity requires planning, and of course your willingness to work while you visit.

The Workaway site offers a variety of features that allows you to narrow down your search of hosts that you would like to stay with, and read reviews about past workawayers that have stayed there. My best advice is to read the reviews and fully look into the host’s profile. Visit www.workaway.information to learn more about this affordable and exciting opportunity!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
