Location: Southeastern Europe
Languages: Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian
Background: Bosnia & Herzegovina and Croatia have both notoriously been known for the devastating civil war that tore up the region in the 1990s. Over the past 20 years, both countries have continuously repaired and established themselves as the secret gems of Europe. Tourism in both countries has boomed over the past few years and continues to draw in people from all over the world as more and more discover the natural and historic beauty both countries have to offer.
Bosnia & Herzegovina
The country is a prime travel destination for those seeking adventure and history. With mountainous terrain, crystal clear rivers and lakes, and a beautiful mix of Turkish, Greek and Roman architecture, the country has something for everyone.
Popular Attractions:
1. Mostar
Mostar offers beautiful architecture, scenery, and a plethora of old shops, cafes, and authentic restaurants. Nearby, the town of Medjugorje is a popular Catholic pilgrimage destination due to the reported sightings of the Virgin Mary.
2. Sarajevo
Bosnia's capital is a modern European city mixed with 15th Century history. In Sarajevo you will find active nightlife and shopping along with the historical Baščaršija. Baščaršija is Sarajevo's old bazaar (marketplace) established by the Turkish in the 1400s.
3. The National Parks
With breathtaking scenery, clean air, and endless waterfalls, lakes, and rivers, Bosnia is perfect for those that crave adventure. Adventure sports such as whitewater rafting, hiking, and kayaking are incredible in the "Heart-Shaped" land of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Croatia
Croatia is often described as Italy and them some minus the expensive costs. Croatia offers over 1,000 miles of crystal clear beaches and some of the most beautiful cities a tourist could encounter. From the palm trees in the Dalmatian region to the bustle of Zagreb, Croatia is sure to impress.
Popular Attractions
1. Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th Century, so the Old Town's history and architecture are sure to amaze. Surrounded by islands and some of the bluest beaches I have ever seen in my life, Dubrovnik is becoming a hub for culture (named a World Heritage Site) and nightlife. With celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyonce coming to vacation, you know Dubrovnik will impress.
2. The Incredible Beaches
When I say the waters are crystal clear, I mean it! The beaches are surrounded by beautiful cities like Split, Zadar, Pula, Makarska, and so many more. Split has been home to the European Ultra Music Festival for the past couple of years because of its beauty and proximity to nightlife.
3. National Parks
Similarly to Bosnia, Croatia has many national parks for those seeking adventure. Pictured above is Krka National Park, one of the most popular waterfalls in the country.
These two countries offer a lot and are truly beginning to boom in the tourism industry. I suggest making Bosnia and/or Croatia one of your next travel destinations, so that you can soon find out why they are considered the gems of Europe.
