Traveling is one of my favorite hobbies and during some of my trips I've picked up good advice. Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way that have helped me a lot with my travel budget!
11. Watch out for VISAs
If you're traveling from the U.S. to Europe, odds are you won't get surprised with a travel VISA — but it never hurts to double check. VISA applications are usually $100+.
10. Book in advance
Last minute flights are very expensive so the sooner you book, the cheaper it'll likely be. Travel Tuesdays, as they're called, are when flights are famously cheapest.
9. Download Viber or WhatsApp
These apps only require wifi to make calls and texts so international calls suddenly become easier and free.
8. Rent a bicycle
Instead of taxiing or Ubering in an urban town, riding a bike is your cheapest option (it's also eco-friendly) so don't waste money calling a cab.
7. Use ATMs instead of the currency exchange
More likely than not, ATMs will have the best exchange rate than at a currency exchange set-up.
6. Use RideGuru to compare different transportation costs
It's hard to tell what's cheaper when deciding between Uber or Lyft, so RideGuru does the work for you as it determines which price is cheaper.
5. Use Airbnb
Definitely a great way to find a cheap place to stay. What's nicer is you're not staying in some basic hotel and you get to experience a lifestyle like a local would.
4. Bargain with local shopkeepers
It's often helpful to try and bargain with local shopkeepers because more likely than not they up the prices for foreigners to get a little extra cash. Learning how to lower prices successfully could save you a buck here and there.
3. Don't forget your student ID
To your surprise, you may be eligible for various student discounts while abroad. Bring it and show it!
2. Street vendors are cheaper than restaurants
Not only is the food cheaper, but the locals cook the food the best!
1. Go Backpacking
This way, you have all your belongings in one carry-on and you don't have to spend $50 checking in a luggage to the cargo storage.
