You dream of going to the ends of the Earth, but know that if you even try, you'll wipe out all of your savings; as a result that dream remains hazy in the distance, and the sad, realistic truth is that it'll eventually become forgotten. I really enjoy traveling, perhaps more so than anything else in the world and I've picked up a few tips and tricks from the places I've gone. This is the most straight forward compilation of prerequisites possible that you should take in order to successfully see and experience the whole wide world.
1. Airfare
Last minute trips always seem like a cute idea, and though the spontaneity is really fun, the price of the ticket certainly won't be. Wherever you go, buy airline tickets many, many months ahead because buying in advance is when they'll be cheapest. Try to not plan around major holidays such as Christmas, since these will obviously be really popular times to travel, therefore inflated prices. Additionally, travel lightly. Having to pay extra for baggage check-in can cost up to $45 per bag, and these unforeseen circumstances can add up if you are traveling to multiple countries.
2. Shelter
If you're looking at resorts and fancy hotels in your dream destination, think again. A major part of traveling cheaply and efficiently is being humble and bashful where you spend. I stand by smaller businesses such as local bed and breakfasts', hostels and AirBNB's. You will most likely have to compromise size or sadly even cleanliness, but these things won't feel like such a major cost when your in your paradise.
3. Food
Okay yes, food is important as heck, but it's so important not to splurge on expensive meals. It's essential to set a daily budget for how much to spend each day, especially on food. (Shoutout to the Norwegian backpacker I once met in Peru that advised me this.) Using his experience as an example, he backpacked all throughout Peru and spent no more than 20 US dollars daily, food included. Now that's a bare minimum and you want to travel comfortably, set a budget that is complimentary to how much you've set aside for your trip. But bottom line, budgeting is essential.
4. Transportation
Research if your destination has Uber services, subways or buses. Try to stay away from taxis that tend to take advantage of tourists and could even steal from or scam them (I say this from experience.)
5. Research
As aforementioned, research the areas in and around your destination, as you can never be too prepared! Learn about the locals, culture, food and familiarize yourself with what prices will look like so they don't come as a shock when you're there.
