Trapped In Your Own Reality

Trump has amassed a following of supporters who believe that Muslims should not be allowed in our country and are assumed to be terrorist because of their religion. These supporters most likely have not been exposed to many American Muslims in their reality. They only hear corrupt constructs of what Muslims are. In all actuality, the violent and ruthless individuals that have been projecting on all Muslims, are extremists. They are an extremely small minority amongst Muslims and are widely rejected amongst Muslims.

While there are many different types of people in America, there simply isn’t enough mixing and mingling amongst these deferent types of people. This is evident in how we view each other. People fear what they do not know and what they do not understand. In the case of our country we are fearing each other, causing us to clash.

The past few years have seen a lot of tension between black communities and the police. The killings of dozens of unarmed black men across the country has sparked outrage. Thus, the #Blaclivesmatter movement was born; a movement that aims to address systematic oppression and racism. However, this movement has been seen as putting black lives over other lives. The response #AllLivesMatter was created. In reality, #Blacklives matter is not saying that Black lives matter more than other lives. Why is it that Black people can not assert that our lives matter, without being accused of putting other lives down?

Reality entrapment is the answer. Those proclaiming that "all lives matter" do not, have not, and will not experience being brutalized by the police, nor have they lost their lives at the hands of the police. Their reality is different than that of, say, Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager who was shot by the police.

Only once it is realized that black lives are in danger, will all lives truly matter. Every injustice in our country should be pursued by everyone, and not just those being directly affected by it. We should collectively step out of our own realities and into someone else’s to understand their plight and fight against injustices together as one.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
