My goal was always to be a theatre student. A dozen auditions later and I can finally say I am one. A fine arts student, a theatre major. I never had time to sit and truly consider what the day to day of college would be like during my touring/application process. Now that I am relaxed, stress-free and finally a part of a small collegiate arts program, I am sure I made all the right choices that led to where I am today. Here's a short list of the things I love.
1. The seriousness I feared and faked has gone out the window.
During my auditioning and applying, everything was serious from the name tags, time limits, judges, recruiters, applications, essays, and even other auditionees. After these auditions I questioned if faking this seriousness was something I'd need to do for all of college. Now I've learned that while there is definitely a level of professionalism I didn't experience i high school theatre, everyone is just along for the ride, training hard to become better and trying to build bonds with people who share their same passion. From teachers to students, we're all just looking to grow together, laugh along the way, and become what our potential has led to.
2. There's less intimidation than high school.
In my high school theatre, everyone tried their hardest to prove they were better, or more dedicated. Though casting was heavily influenced by outside factors in my school, it seemed to be the only thing students would base their justification of talent off of. I loved doing productions outside of my school to get away from this during high school. I am pleased to find college arts is just like the outside of school arts I sought out, everyone respects each other's abilities, goals, and appreciates that we all have the same drive and dedication to our art.
3. People chose this major for different reasons than I did.
I think this one is a little more obvious. Everyone follows a passion for different reasons. All arts majors are different. There are some jocks who sustained injuries that led to an arts discovery. Some have familial bonds to the art. Some find happiness through it. Some love scenic design, and some want to perform naked ballet. However, despite these differences we all fit under the same umbrella of a shared interest.
4. Gossip doesn't stop after high school.
When you're in a small major, you will know everyone by the end of the first month. You'll know their backstory, interests, and even their parents names. You can't escape it, so embrace the closeness!
5. Doubts will go away.
Finally, after finishing nearly a month of school I can say that I am more sure than ever that majoring in fine arts and pursuing a career doing what I love is the right choice, regardless of monetary detriments, judgement, or whatever the world thinks. Do what you love and love what you do.
