Transitioning from a big city to small town

A layman's perspective

A general consensus suggests that moving from a bustling city to serene suburban life is not an appealing choice to the most unless you are a retired person or is trying to give up all worldly possessions. I agree that your favorite shopping outlet is nowhere to be found in a 50 mile radius in a little town, but before you conclude something let's try to consider a few things which might tilt your balance a little more towards these suburban heavens.

Parking spaces:

Scratching your heads after searching every corner around that downtown to find a street parking is nothing new in a big city. A 10-feet of vacant spot to park your car at times would give you more pleasure than discovering a pot of gold. Illustrate your grim parking story to a suburban bloke with F150 and he will be scratching his head wondering what's wrong with you. Nobody in small town has parking woes because there isn't any. Every building and every street will have vacant spots outnumbering the parked vehicles all the time (And yes most of the street parking is free!).

No need to travel long distances:

When your entire city is no more than 4 miles in either direction, no place is far enough to consume more time than defrosting that frozen pizza. Less traffic, most of the time, is the cherry on top for people who despise spending their major portions of the day driving to work or school. It is then up to you how you enjoy this added time to your day which has been saved on traveling. State this fact to a New Yorker, and you might end up getting punched in the face for rubbing his commute endured wounds.

Peaceful surroundings:

Do you feel that you can hear cars even in your dreams or you strongly reckon that the term "pin drop silence" is something which doesn’t exist anywhere other than in the moon, be prepared to discover the tranquility in little towns. Some say about their city that never sleeps but I can assure you that small towns do sleep and that too without snoring. If you've had it with noisy surroundings even in the night it's high time you pack your bags to move to a cute little town.

Outdoor activities:

If you are person fond of outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking and fishing, but cannot wait for a long weekend to travel long distances for those vacation places a small town may cater to most of these needs, if not all. One major perk of living in a small town is that you have hiking trails or a water body in close proximity to your house and you can venture to it easily in the evening or the weekends.

No more back breaking rents or house costs:

One of the major advantage, in my personal opinion, of living in a small town is affordable housing. Even a well-earning person has to allocate a sizable portion of his salary for house rent if he is living in a reasonably-sized apartment in major cities. And as far owning a big house is concerned, you better half a diploma in bank robbery. On the contrary, house rent is not much in small towns and you can rent a huge apartment without boring a hole in your pocket. Also, the property rates are significantly lower and one can easily own a house.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
