Fresh out of high school, I was still undecided about the major I wanted to study or the career path I wanted to pursue. To give myself more time, I started my academic journey part-time at a community college for five years, while working a full-time job. After spending much time in prayer over that span of time, God put on my heart that I needed to transfer to finish a degree plan. After researching and visiting several campuses in Texas, I realized that Tarleton State University stood out to me unlike any others. I took a tour and completely loved the campus and the atmosphere in the small town of Stephenville, Texas.
The hurdle was quickly approaching from the horizon. I became more anxious and unsure about what it feels like living in a new environment, 70 miles from home. Better yet, moving into a dorm with a complete stranger is quite scary to think about. Although I don’t consider myself the most social person, I knew I needed to make some friends, but not just temporary ones. I wanted to make new lifelong friends. One of the best decisions I initially made was attending a social camp just for transfer students at TSU. This is where I met the greatest friends I still have at Tarleton right now! That’s when I overcame the hurdle.
However, shortly afterwards I realized I couldn’t take all the credit for this accomplishment. Before that point, I didn’t truly recognize the important part my parents contributed. Along the way, they encourage me to keep going with my degree. Additionally, I remembered that my friends back at home would still be there when I would visit on weekends or be there during breaks. With confidence, I can tell you that my last two semesters at Tarleton State have changed my life for the better. My friends, both away and on campus, have meant so much to me. Despite all of this, I would not have been able to do any of this without my relationship with God. It is truly important to continually set aside time to spend in prayer with God and studying the Bible.
With these things considered, the key to transferring to another college is your overall lifestyle. My heavenly Father, loving family, dearest friends, and strong standards have kept me in line with completing my degree and retaining a wonderful experience at Tarleton State. Even though I’m not the party girl of my friend group, they understand and give respect to my decision. Without them, I don’t know what I would do or how the college experience would be like. Being able to see their beautiful, smiling faces when I arrive back from weekends at home helps me get through the week of work ahead. Overall, my faith has guided me through it all: Difficult assignments, friend troubles and even occasional loneliness. Remember this: God is always there for you when you seek Him first.
