I am currently wrapping up my junior year here at Texas Tech. I transferred in last fall with a lot of hopes and dreams about what this school would do for me. I can honestly say it has fulfilled each and every one.
1. Transfer Techsans changed my life.
Texas Tech has a student organization specifically for transfer students called Transfer Techsans. They host their own welcome week for transfer students at the beginning of every semester where you can attend events and activities that are geared towards transfers instead of freshman, and have a fun and interactive kickoff night (where I met some of my best friends and future roommate). This organization made such a big impact on me that I decided to apply for a job with them and now I'm a Transfer Ambassador!
2 . I saved a TON of money.
I saved so much money by getting my associates degree first. I lived at home, worked the same part-time job I had in high school, and came to Tech as a junior with no debt. Texas Tech also has multiple scholarships set aside for transfers. I was lucky enough to be awarded one due to my hours and GPA. Free money is always a plus ESPECIALLY when you're a college student. Getting my associates degree in San Antonio was extremely beneficial, but I didn't want to stay there the rest of my college career.
3. Staying home wasn't for me.
Although San Antonio is awesome, I knew it wasn't the best place for me to finish out my college career. Besides the fact that UTSA didn't necessarily have the best program for my major, and private schools were out of my budget, I felt that I would grow more in a new environment. After being successful in my first two years of college I was ready to be on my own and finally have the college experience I had been longing for.
4. Lubbock is actually a great college town.
There is virtually no traffic to worry about, everything is about fifteen minutes away, and yes there are actually places to shop. Living in San Antonio I had friends that lived about thirty minutes away and I would see them multiple times a week. That's a ton of commuting time AND gas money!
5. I didn't have to compromise.
The first time I toured the College of Media and Communication I was instantly impressed. I quickly realized the other colleges I was accepted to basically wanted me to change majors to fit what they had in their curriculum, but Tech was different. Here I didn't have to compromise and was able to both major and minor in things I am passionate about.
6. Tech truly does set you up for success.
Here you have every opportunity to succeed, you just have to take advantage of it. There are always resume critiques, networking workshops, and so much more. You name it, we have it. Not to mention all the professional student organizations that help you make connections in your field for after you graduate.
7. They help you get a job.
I am currently a member of Tech PR where we recently went on a trip to Dallas and spent the day visiting different PR agencies. This was a huge networking opportunity for us and a great way to get to know our desired field better. The career center also offers a lot of helpful resources such as etiquette dinners, How To's on negotiating salary, successfully tackling a job fair, and writing a cover letter
