Being a transfer student at UMD is definitely a life-changing experience. I went to a community college that was the size of like two buildings at UMD, and the change was an overwhelming experience but so worth it. I am here to help with this back to school guide!

Talk to your classmates/ introduce yourselfĀ

Giphy

One of best things I did was just simply introduce myself to my classmates. I explained that I am transfer student/ new to UMD. It turned out that person was a transfer student too! We already begun debating about community colleges and university experiences. So be a fearless terp and just say hi! Chances are someone is in a similar position as you!

meet up with old friendsĀ

Giphy

During the first few weeks of school I met up with my community college friends that transferred with me and some of my old high school friends. It's a nice feeling with someone you know that went through the same process as you and continued to stay in touch. It's also a great way to meet new people as well, your friend's friends can become your friends! Aren't friends great?

Join TOCSL and other clubs/ activitiesĀ

One of my favorite communities ever on campus was TOCSL, and I have met so many wonderful people! In fact, I have a group of friends that meet once a month at the TOCSL "Good Morning Commuters" where you can chill with your friends and get free breakfast food. Those Chocolate muffins and Apple cider drinks are life. So go join TOCSL and also check out the First Look Fair for more information about TOCSL and like million other clubs and activities at UMD, so you're college experience can be more enjoyable one!

Hit the ground Running with academics/ study buddies and tutorsĀ

Giphy

Of course, there should be times to have fun and blow off some stress but it's essential to pay attention to your studies, and it's helpful to have some friends to study with/ tutors. Maryland has so many opportunities. It is made for you to excel in your work and find your passion. So get started as soon as possible when the semester begins. You'll thank me later

Be PositiveĀ

Giphy

I recommend staying positive or at least attempt to. As a transfer student, I know it can be overwhelming experience but you will fall in love with UMD and this will be an incredible experience. So don't worry Terps! You'll make it through this alright

As long as you follow this guide, I can guarantee that your time as a transfer student will be something that you will look back and smile! Welcome to Maryland and this is your chance to be a #fearlessterp.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you donā€™t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldnā€™t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing ā€” finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
