Anybody who is a avid trail stomper knows just how many thoughts go through ones head when on the trail. There seems to be some kind of switch that turns on thoughts to full speed...
There are times where it is a beautiful summer day when the trail seems to be going on forever. There are really only 3 ways to handle a trail that never seems to end, to make time go by quicker.
1. If it is a group outing, talking amongst each other is a good way to solve this.
2. Think about the growling stomach and sore feet because they speak louder than any words some days.
3. Reflect on life and deep thoughts.. ( and occasionally getting stupid songs that come in and out. Why is it always Christmas songs or something like Oompa Loompa?)
As a hiker, all 3 are very common, and happen even on almost every trip whether it is a huge multi day trip, or a small day trip.
The 3rd one can be extremely beneficial. Many people head out on the trail because they love being outside and that is where they clear their mind that best... What if, having thoughts going through our heads actually helps us clear our minds?
This world is so crazy. People have questions being thrown at them left and right. This can be so demanding that their thoughts are filled with decisions, and answers.
Being out on the trail can give an opportunity to let thoughts be thoughts, and people to reflect on their life. Thoughts may be crazy, but hiking can be a place that releases pressure, as well as let people think about whatever they want! Maybe someone needs just a little bit more time to ponder a decision.
Trail thoughts can project some of the most sophisticated and truthful thoughts. Peoples lives can be changed as they stop talking, stop worrying, and start thinking. Hiking can help people reflect on God's beautiful creation, as well as what He is doing in their life, or who He is to them.
So next time YOU hit the trail... spend some time in silence, and think and ponder about whatever needs to be thought about. Let thoughts be thoughts.
(Just make sure your thoughts are louder than a growly stomach!)
