During this year's G7 Summit, President Trump made it very clear once again that he is not a fan of tariffs. The Summit, which was held in Quebec, ended up being quite divisive due to Trump's growing isolationism and his incompatible positions on trade.
Trump demanded to put an end to tariffs, subsidies, and barriers because he claims that the U.S. has been treated unfairly, like a "piggy bank that everyone keeps robbing." This recent statement has only fueled the fire, of course, between Trump our closest allies.
Only a week prior to the Summit, Trump, in an effort to level the playing field and supposedly protect national security, slapped significant tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from Canada and the EU, as well as Mexico. They have all announced their own retaliatory tariffs to impose on the U.S., although we have yet to see how this will ultimately play out.
French President Macron believes an agreement can be reached, while others remain more skeptical.
