What's Love Got To Do With It?

"If love is the answer, could you please rephrase the question?" — Lily Tomlin

What's Love Got To Do With It?

I’m here to ask about love.

*vomit noise*

I don’t mean how much you love your dog or your grandmother or pizza but the love you share romantically and intimately with another person.

I know, I know… love is a touchy subject. It’s the holidays. Love is in the air until about February 15 when you’re sitting alone snuggled up with 50% off chocolate, your favorite comforter, and the second season of "The O.C."

OK, I’ll stop ranting about my future plans and get to my point.

I am 21 years old and I have never been in love.

All of my relationships have lasted about 10 seconds. I tend to develop crushes on boys I meet on the sidewalk who smile my way but whenever anybody shows the slightest interest in me I run for the hills. Needless to say…the romance in my life is a little off.

Love is everywhere.

My parents are in love.

My friends are in love.

Random people in my classes are in love.

Strangers are in love.

Everybody is in love.

The other day I saw on Facebook this girl who has been with her boyfriend for seven years…seven.

I can't even keep t-shirts that long...imagine keeping another person. I know I can't.

My grandparents have been in love for over 60 years. That's more than most people have been alive. Love is a strong and powerful force that I just can't seem to wrap my head around.

What's the hype?

I see people in love all around me, in movies and in real life. I love my friends, I love my family, and I love burritos...how similar is the feeling? These are the questions that fill my mind whenever I watch chick flicks, romantic comedies, or even action movies. (When you think about it, "Fight Club" can be quiet romantic, trust me). When I see a couple holding hands I wonder...is this for me?

Am I capable of opening myself up, being completely vulnerable and loving another person...or letting them love me? I don't know. It's difficult to think about.

Love.

What’s it like?

What’s the point?

Is it all worth it?

Maybe one day, I’ll let you know.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
