As I have been scrolling through my Twitter feed lately, I have been noticing many articles posted by Total Sorority Move that have made me frustrated. Why? Because Total Sorority Move makes sorority women look immensely stereotypical, insensitive and just overall gross. Let me just say that not every single thing TSM posts is horrible, just the grand majority. That grand majority is what gets the most views and what TSM promotes the most via social media. This means that if people actually take this content seriously, that makes me, as a sorority woman, look immensely stereotypical, insensitive and just over all gross to an outsider. I don't know about you, but I definitely do not want to or wish to be portrayed that way.
Here are some examples of the incredibly insulting content I have been seeing:
"Trust me, I'm a dick doctor." "How To Guarantee You'll Get Laid, Part 5..." Part 5?! If you need a read on how to get laid, why not read Cosmopolitan magazine? We do not need to teach that on a website about sorority women.
I mean, come on, TSM?! How about we promote women in the workplace without being incredibly sexist and demeaning?
OK, sure let's just add to the stereotype even more by claiming that we need to go out all the time. Every single weekend. Even the night before Easter. Then, let's use it as an excuse to complain about how it will suck to wake up because we will be so hungover after our little Easter pre-game. As a sorority woman who does not drink, this stereotype is incredibly annoying.
Yep, cause all sorority women are gold diggers.
Sorority women are sluts? All right, yeah, cool. Thanks, TSM!
The last piece that appalled me was when I took the quiz "How Srat Are You?" I answered the questions genuinely and this was the result:
Sorry TSM, you were wrong. I am in a sorority and I care about it a lot. I do even srat, but in my own way.
Not all sorority women are the same. Not even the majority of sorority women match the incredibly demeaning stereotypes Total Sorority Move portrays. It is time we break down these stereotypes.
And it is time that I click the unfollow button.
