Perrier, S.Pellegrino or Schweppes club soda, but when you try Topo Chico you will discover what all the buzz (or ‘fizz’) is about.
Topo Chico originated in Mexico and has been bottled in Monterrey, Mexico since 1895. It didn’t become a hit in the US until the 90s when they decided to market their brand more around America.
People probably didn’t start noticing the drink though until a few summers ago. In fact, it wasn’t until last year living in Austin, Texas that I began noticing the pretty yellow and red label. However, once I noticed it in ATX, I saw it everywhere. Whether you were in a coffee shop, a bar, a restaurant or a music festival, you were sipping on some Topo Chico.
At this point, the bottle and label have become iconic – I mean look at it! The branding is vintage, yet youthful. The bottle is glass and with a top you can only open with a bottle opener, you feel fancier than ever.
Not to mention, the stuff inside is pretty delish. It’s bubblier than its competition and purely refreshing. Also, the thing has no calories or sugar, so it’s practically like you’re drinking holy water. And finally, they offer various flavors as well. You can get it with a twist of lime or grapefruit and it’s actually like a party in your mouth.
And if you’re 21, the stuff is fantastic for mixed drinks. Many bars are getting in on the fun and making drinks like the Topo Palomas or the TopoTito. But, if you’re not of age, it’s still great for other sorts of mixed drinks. For example, Topo Chico and juice, Topo Chico and coffee or even Topo Chico and iced tea make legit combos. Seriously, the ideas are endless…
So for real: the next time you see that lil bottle in the water isle at HEB, or in the gas station cooler, pick it up and try it out. You seriously won’t regret it.
