6 Things That Should Not Be Up For Political Debate

Some things are bigger than being a Democrat or a Republican.

Politics is a huge part of life. Politicians make a lot of decisions that affect us every day. While some things will never not be political like how much people should be taxed or how our money should be spent, there are some things that should not be political.

1. Basic human rights

The fact that there are some people that think that any humans rights should be up for political debate makes me cringe. All humans deserve the same amount of rights and your political ideology should not be based on limiting the rights of other people.

For one, you're just being a jerk and two you're being a hypocrite because you wouldn't want anyone infringing on your rights so why do you have the right to do that to others?

2. The environment

We only have one Earth. The fact that people think taking care of the environment should be a political issue is beyond ridiculous. Sure money is nice, but you can't enjoy your money if you don't have a place to live because you destroyed it.

You wouldn't want to live in a messy disgusting house so why should people be forced to live in a polluted environment because you think rich companies need to cut costs or because you think recycling and clean energy are a waste of time?

3. Background checks on firearms

Whether or not people should have the right to own certain guns is definitely a political debate. But one thing that shouldn't be is having strong background checks on guns. Preventing people who aren't safe to have a gun from being able to get a gun benefits everyone.

If you are eligible to have a gun having stronger background checks won't affect you except you'll have to wait a little longer to get a gun. But at the end of the daily lives are more important than you may be having to wait an extra week or two to get a gun.

4. An accurate health education

Access to learning accurate health information should be a right of every individual. If someone doesn't want their teenager to sit in on a health class because it conflicts with their beliefs that is their choice but other students shouldn't be forced into receiving a subpar education. Keeping people healthy and safe should be a goal of our society, not a compromise.

5. Affordable education

Honestly, this one makes no sense. Why wouldn't you want more people to be college educated?? Without our citizens being college educated there would be no doctors, lawyers, or people helping run the businesses you spend your money at. Having access to affordable education only benefits everyone.

6. Equality

This one should be a no-brainer but some people are still living in the past. Why anyone thinks whether or not people should be equal is a political issue makes no sense to me. You wouldn't want to be treated less because of your race, gender, or sexuality so why should anyone else?

What are some issues you think shouldn't be up for debate?

18 Things I Want To Do Now That I'm 18

I'm technically an adult, so I'm legally required to live a little, right?

For the entirety of my high school career, I was always seen as the goody-two-shoes. I never got in trouble with a teacher, I kept stellar grades, and when I wasn't doing extracurricular activities, I was at home studying. Even when I did go out, it was usually with a bunch of fellow band geeks. The night would end before 11:00 PM and the only controversial activity would be a fight based on who unfairly won a round of Apples-to-Apples when someone else clearly had a better card (I promise I'm not still holding a grudge).

Now that I'm officially an adult, I want to pursue some new things. I want to experience life in a way that I never allowed myself to do prior to entering college. These are the years that I'm supposed to embark on a journey of self-discovery, so what better way to do that than to create a bucket list?
