5 Topics To Avoid At The Thanksgiving Dinner Table

Holidays usually consist of spending lots of time with family and friends, lots of holiday parties, eating delicious food, and taking some time to be thankful for the things we are fortunate enough to have. The holiday season is a time to rejoice and celebrate, but these joyous times can also bring not-so joyous questions and dreadful conversations. So when you are with your family at the dinner table this Thanksgiving, here are some topics to avoid discussing if you thoroughly want to enjoy your turkey dinner.

1. The "How's School?" Conversation

Ah yes, the dreaded of question of school, grades, majors, and just about everything else that comes with it. Let's face it, whether you like it or not, this is most likely going to be one of the first questions your relatives are going to try to ask you. So if you are not doing so hot in school at the moment, I would try to avoid this question at all costs.

2. The Love Life

Whether it's existent or non-existent, questions about your love life may start to creep their way onto the Thanksgiving table. If for some reason you can't avoid this topic, just laugh and move on with the conversation-- they'll probably get your drift.

3. Each Other

Thanksgiving usually consists of turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, and a hint of drama. All it takes is one rumor or snarky comment to get things heated at the dinner table. So avoid drama/gossip; the best way to do this is to focus on eating a lot of food to avoid talking.

4. Politics

With the many debates that have been occurring as a result of the recent election, it's going to be pretty hard to avoid talking about politics this Thanksgiving. But you must try. We all know that if there's anything people get opinionated over it's politics. Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican or just about anything else on the political spectrum, let's all just focus on being one thing this Thanksgiving: thankful.

5. The Economy

Money, money, and more money. Isn't it enough that Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, not to mention some stores that are open on Thanksgiving? Instead of talking about money let's take some time, at the very least the 24 hours we have on Thanksgiving, to appreciate the things that we are fortunate enough to have.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
