We encounter social situations every day and sometimes we face uncomfortable moments during those interactions. As much as you try to avoid them, they always seem to creep up behind you unexpectedly. Here are some of the most awkward moments I have experienced in my life:
5. The Double Greeting
Have you ever been out in the grocery store and you look over and see your acquaintance from afar? Once your eyes meet the appropriate thing to do would be to go over and speak to each other. The conversation is smooth. You talk about your life, job, mother and continue on with your day of grocery shopping. After your friendly encounter. Minutes later, you are turning into another aisle and then you spot your acquaintance again. What do you do? It's too late to pretend you didn’t see them, you have already made eye contact. You have already said hello, are you to speak again? Then comes the painfully awkward, smile, giggle, and pass until you are no longer in each other’s field of vision.
4. The No-Introduction Friend Encounter
You and your best friend are hanging out at the movies and after you have your concessions ready to enter the theater, your bestie spots one of her old friends. They scream of excitement and joy and laughs fill the air. You stand on the side waiting to be included in the conversation with a simple introduction. However, your best friend seems to have forgotten your existence and you are now standing in the middle of their conversation looking like an idiot. You think to yourself, should I introduce myself or just wait for her? You want to reach in your purse and get your phone to pretend you are texting someone important but that may be too obvious. By the time you are done analyzing what your move should be, they are saying “Nice seeing you again” and you are still standing there looking foolish.
3. The Simultaneous Speech Phone Conversation
You’re on the phone with a distant cousin or friend and you all are having a standard conversation. Then comes the awkward moment where you both begin to speak at the same time and then you both stop yourself, letting the other one speak first. Once there's an odd silence the same thing happens and continues on at least 3 more times. In this situation, you cannot help but laugh to ease the discomfort.
2. The “I’m Sorry, Who are You?”
Have you been in a social situation where there are no familiar faces and you feel left out? Then you see someone you used to know not too long ago and get excited because now you know at least one person. You go up to the person and say “Hey how have you been?” and they look at you as if you are crazy. They respond with “I’m Sorry, I don't believe we’ve met.” Now you seem insane to them, even though you know this person used to talk to you all the time in class together. You try to refresh their memory but they still do not remember you. Once you've given up, you awkwardly walk away and want to crawl into a hole.
1. The Baby Voice Stranger
The top awkward moment is when you are talking with someone and they speak so low you do not understand what they are saying. So you ask them to repeat themselves and they continue speaking at the same minuscule volume. After asking them to repeat themselves for a third time with no results, you then try to pretend you know what they are saying by simply smiling, nodding your head, and occasionally saying “yea.” The awkward moment is when they ask you a question such as “Where are you from” and you respond with smiling, nodding, and saying yes. They look at you as if you are a fool and now you are confused. You think to yourself “Oh wow did they just ask me a question?”
We have all had at least one of these awkward moments happen to us and the best way to ease the moment is to laugh it off.
