11 Ways To Know You're From New Jersey

In This Article:

I am a South Jersey Native that relocated to South Carolina about 10 years ago. Now that I have been around the south for quite some time I've had the chance to notice a lot of differences between myself and the locals. These are my top 11 ways you know you are a true Jersian.

Its pork roll,  not taylor ham

Giphy

Growing up in South Jersey pork roll was everywhere and quite a common thing to eat. You’ll be used to finding it on your egg and cheese breakfast bagel. It was a shock to me when I realized that there is only ONE grocery store in my area that even carried it. What made things even worse is nobody even knew what it was.

The Eagles are the it team, end of discussion

Giphy

The title of this one says it all. Even our public schools have Eagles Spirit Day. There is nothing like walking out of a Wawa on a Sunday during football season and hearing someone say "Go Birds!". There is no other football team that has such die-hard fans!

Everyone thinks you scream when you talk

Giphy

I can't tell you how many times people have told me to calm down when I wasn't even yelling. It's a Jersey Thing.

Having at least 5 Wawas in your town

Giphy

Wawa is your everyday pit stop. I never imagined living in a place where Wawa wasn't a 5 min drive. Now that I have to live without it trust me when I say Wawa is a necessity! Whether it be coffee, a cheese bagel, or their annual hoagie fest, Wawa has never let me down.

Going Down the “Shore”

Giphy

Summers are spent "down the shore" not "at the beach". Laying in the sand and catching waves during the day while hitting the boardwalk at night. Wildwood was the one with the best rides and made for summers that you would never forget!

Mischief Night is a Thing

Giphy

I always assumed mischief night was known everywhere, which is not the case. For those of you who do not know what Mischief night is, it is on October 30th the night before Halloween. On this night your house could fall victim to being egged, teepeed, or even a smashed mailbox.

You’ve Never Pumped Your Own Gas

Giphy

20. Regular. Cash. These are the words you say to the gas station attendant as you pull up at the pump. We do not pump our gas and if you asked me to do it before I moved, I would not know what to do.

South Jersey is TOTALLY Separate from North Jersey

Giphy

Although New Jersey is considered one state, we drew our own lines. North Jersey is NOT South Jersey and vice versa. Some people even try to say there's such a thing as Central Jersey. South Jersey is better- it just is.

You’re a Pizza Snob

Giphy

Just like Wawa, there are also local pizza joints at every corner. If you've never eaten pizza in Jersey, I feel sorry for you. With all of the Italians in the area, we are definitely spoiled with some delicious pies.

Philly (Philadelphia) is Your City

Giphy

You want a night out with friends? Just hop on the Patco speed line to Philly! You have a great variety of food, tons of bars and clubs, historic landmarks, and so much more. You will never run out of things to do!

It’s a Hoagie NOT a “Sub”

Giphy

Hoagies are deli meat(s) and cheese on a roll. Other states refer to the sandwich as a sub.

People from South Jersey are one of a kind.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
