For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by the concept of love. I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and I have my mother to thank for that. Growing up, she would turn on her romance movies before she went to bed and ask me if I wanted to join her which, of course, I did. I have actually lost count of all the romances I’ve seen and dedicated a playlist to them, which is kind of lame but I am not at all ashamed of. Honestly, I struggled trying to pick my top ten movies but I feel content with this list and highly encourage you to watch them if you love love the way I do.
1. Bridget Jones Diary (2001)
This movie was my mother’s favorite and has quickly become mine. I can honestly relate to Bridget Jones on a spiritual level when she is singing “All By Myself” and drinking a glass of wine in her messy apartment. This movie is quite comical but truly tugs on the heart strings when Mr. Darcy, her childhood acquaintance, and Daniel, her boss, both try to win her heart throughout the movie. If you enjoy Hugh Grant and Colin Firth I recommend giving this movie a try and promise that you won’t regret it.
2. Notting Hill (1999)
Ah, Notting Hill. Yet another great movie that stars Hugh Grant. This movie follows the love story of a bookshop owner named William Thacker, played by Hugh Grant, and movie star Anna Scott, played by Julia Roberts. Throughout the movie I just wanted to hug Hugh Grant and let him know that it would all work out for him but unfortunately I could not and had to sit there and watch this poor man struggle. If you are a fan of Hugh Grant I highly recommend giving this movie a try.
3. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
This movie actually made me cry at the end but, in my defense, I am also highly emotional while watching any romance movie. It is about an advertiser, played by Matthew McConaughey, and a journalist, played by Kate Hudson, who are assigned jobs to make one another either fall in love or run away. Of course, the whole time I am rooting for them to become an actual couple but…you’ll have to watch the movie to find out whether this broke my heart or brought joy to my life.
4. Midnight in Paris (2011)
This movie is actually one that I have more recently watched and if you are interested in the 20’s and the great artists of that time then you need to watch this movie. Basically, a couple is vacationing in Paris and the writer, played by Owen Wilson, keeps being taken to the 20’s every night around midnight where he converses with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein. Due to this movie referencing my favorite artists, it soon became a favorite.
5. Singin’ in the Rain (1952)
I was first introduced to this film when I was in my elementary school music class and have loved it ever since. This film is a musical that discusses film in the 1920’s and the transition from silent black and white films to color and sound. It is about Don Lockwood, an actor, who is involved in an onscreen romance with Lina, who mistakes this for real love. Don has been secretly dating the woman that dubs for Lina and when Lina finds out she gets really mad. It’s honestly a really good movie and if you enjoy old films you should watch it.
6. One Day (2011)
Okay, I cried so much during this movie and I’m not ashamed. I don’t understand how someone cannot shed a single tear while watching it. It’s about these two friends who are in love with each other only when the other has moved on and it’s really irritating. Anne Hathaway is so good in this film and you really should watch it unless you don’t want to cry.
7. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)
This movie is about a flighty party girl named Holly, played by Audrey Hepburn, and writer Paul Varjak, played by George Peppard. Holly aspires for glamour and Tiffany’s, an expensive and popular jewelry store, has exactly that. Paul soon moves into the same building as Holly and is fascinated yet confused by her. They quickly become friends and he desperately want to fulfill Holly’s aspirations but is unsure if he can. This movie is really cute and I recommend this along with every movie in this list.
8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
There really isn’t too much I can say about this one without any spoilers but it is essentially about a couple who is having relationship problems and go through a procedure to remove each other from their memories. As Joel, played by Jim Carrey, goes through this process he remembers certain aspects if their relationship and you’ll have to watch the rest to see what happens. It’s really interesting and if you love Jim Carrey you’d really like this.
9. Leap Year (2010)
This movie was actually recommended to me from a friend and I am so glad she told me about it. It takes place in Ireland and stars Amy Adams and Matthew Goode. It follows the journey that Adams’ character takes in order to reach her current boyfriend, whom she wants to propose to due to a Celtic tradition that only takes place on February 29. On her way to meet her boyfriend she meets an Irish innkeeper, who is on the verge of losing his business and agrees to take her where she needs to go since he is low on money. They go through a lot of unlikely events and it ends in exactly the way you want it to. Highly recommend this movie and can promise you that you will not be displeased with the ending.
10. Two Weeks Notice (2002)
This is my final favorite movie and, once again, stars Hugh Grant. (I just really love that man!). It takes place in New York city and follows the story of an environmental lawyer, Sandra Bullock, who feels as if she is more of a nanny to her boss, Hugh Grant, rather than a legal advisor. She becomes infuriated by this and turns in her two weeks’ notice, which her boss accepts as long as she hires her own replacement. After many interviews, she settles on a promising woman, who she later despises. If you like Hugh Grant as much as I do, then please watch this movie. I can guarantee that you’ll love it!
