As my last year on junior college began, in the smaller town of Twin Falls Idaho, I knew it was time to start getting serious about where I chose to continue my education. I looked and looked for the best animal science schools in the country, and every school had their ups and downs. When I ran into Kansas State University, my decision took a sharp turn. Here is why I, like many students, chose K-State:
1. K- State has over 250 majors, minors and options
There is something for everyone! Don't be scared to explore your interests!
2. The town of Manhattan
I know for me, I wanted to live somewhere that was friendly and also fun! Manhattan definitely caters to that! MHK ( Manhattan Kansas) has everything you would want, there is a mall, zoo, museums, movie theater, and tons of local restaurants. Don't forget Aggieville! During the day or night there is always something happening down in the 'Ville! MHK was also ranked the #1 best college town in America!
3. The people
Back home in Twin Falls Idaho, the population is roughly 45,000 people. Manhattan has about 56,000 people. I was scared to move to Manhattan because I literally knew nobody. Everyone here is super friendly and goes out of their way to help you in anyway they can. I am sure you will hear often the term "Family", here at K-State, and it sounds pretty cliche, but I learned fast that everyone does truly care. MHK is now my home away from home.
4. The teachers
Yes, maybe some professors won't mesh well with your learning style, but the quality of teachers here are amazing! A lot of them are leaders in their fields and do a lot of research for the industry they are teaching. K-State teachers really know what they are talking about, go to class and soak up the information that an industry leader is teaching you.
5. Clubs and organizations
There are more than 475 clubs and organizations here on campus. Yes, that's right: 475! There is bound to be a club that matches your interests. No matter what you major is, there is most likely a club or organization that has something to do with your career goals!
6. Lots of outdoor activities
This is one of my favorite things about MHK. The landscape is absolutely beautiful. From hiking around on the Konza Prairie, or my personal favorite Pillsbury Crossing, if you love to spend time outdoors this is the town for you!
7. Sports!
Just wait until you go to your first Wildcat football or basketball game! The atmosphere is electric, and everyone comes together to cheer for the Wildcats! There are fight songs and the famous Wabash Cannonball, which was ranked the #1 best pregame tradition by ESPN. K-State is part of the Big 12 athletic conference, so the athletes are top notch!
8. The campus
White limestone is what makes up most of the buildings here on campus, which is full of rich history. A lot of the buildings on campus are brand new and offers the only best for their students! Check out the engineering building, the Rec, Wefald hall, and all the other buildings here on campus! Also, go check out the library. By far the best library I have ever seen, and the best place to study.
9. Kansas City
If you want to travel to a more populated area KC is less than 2 hours away. KC offers what every typical big city has.
10. Resources on campus
When your stuck on a question in math, or don't know how to balance that chemical equation just hop on over to the tutoring center. Their tutors are extremely helpful, and you can schedule one during the week or even just walk in and they have designated tutors that will assist you! The best part, its absolutely free! K-State also has an amazing career center. Need that resume polished up? Or need help finding an internship? Give the career center a call! Counseling services is also a great resource if you need someone to talk to. Just across the street from campus is Lafene Health Center, where they can help you with almost anything and a lot of their services are extremely affordable or even at no cost to you! Take advantage of all the resources on campus, they are a great tool to use.
