Soon Kanye West will be dropping his currently untitled gospel album. So now would be an excellent time to look back at the greatest songs he's released over the years. Note: It was so difficult to narrow it down to just 10, and I could keep adding on to his honorable mentions.
Honorable Mentions
"All Day"
"Jesus Walks"
"Good Life"
"Through The Wire"
"Homecoming"
"Monster"
10. "N****s In Paris"
I know this song is technically credited to Kanye West and Jay-Z but I still wanted to include it on the list. The song was the hit single from their joint album "Watch The Throne" and went five times platinum. Throughout the song, both Jay-Z and West go hard over a menacing beat that is sure to get you pumped. Perhaps the best part of the song is the sample. About halfway through the song, Will Ferrell was sampled from his movie "Blades of Glory." He says, "No one knows what it means but it's provocative" which is kind of a statement about rap lyrics. A very clever move by Jay and Ye.
9. "Heartless"
Heartless was West's second single from his album "808s and Heartbreaks" and made its mark on the charts instantly. It debuted at number four and peaked at number two. It became one of the best-selling singles of all time at over 5.5 million copies. West was experimenting with auto-tune a lot before it was made famous by artists like T-Pain and this song is his auto-tune masterpiece. West spends the track lamenting over his his break up with his fiancee months after his mother passed. Heartless remains as one of the best breakup songs in recent years, especially considering it is told from the male's perspective by a rapper. Kudos Kanye.
8. "Spaceship"
In my opinion, "Spaceship" is one of West's most underrated songs. Kanye raps about his troubles working for Gap. It is the song for the modern working man who hates his job. We always have a few days where we wish we could just get on a spaceship and leave after a long day at work. Frequent collaborators GLC and Consequence help West tell his story of the struggles of living in the ghettos of Chicago. West also expresses his frustration with the lack of recognition as a producer and a ghostwriter. Not the most popular West song but you gotta appreciate listening to a young West complain about everyday struggles.
7. "Can't Tell Me Nothing"
This song was the leading single from West's third album, "Graduation," and for good reason. It features slow, moody synth-driven production, which would be commonplace on "Graduation." West spends four and a half minutes laying into critics and haters while also questioning life. The song was nominated for rap song of the year but lost to another West song, "Good Life," which I consider to be inferior. Most people may only know the song from its use in the popular film "The Hangover," but that is just a shame.
6. "All Of The Lights"
If you're going to listen to this song you have got to listen to the interlude. I wish the tracks weren't separated, because the setup is incredible. An amazing string ensemble opens the powerful track followed by a chorus cutting in. The song features vocals from several recording artists including Rihanna, Drake, Alicia Keys and Elton John among others. The song won the Grammy for best rap song and best rap/sung collaboration. Throughout the song, West raps about the problems of living in the celebrity spotlight. The powerful style he incorporated for this track was prevalent on the whole album "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and will reappear on this list.
5. "Gold Digger"
Kanye's famous, and somewhat hypocritical song about women who only date men for money. The song was released as the second single for "Late Registration" and immediately took off. It broke the record for most digital downloads in a week at over 80,000. Kanye shows his true skills as a rapper as he flows through the track exploring the "gold digging" lifestyle many girls seem to live. The song is loud and catchy, making it almost impossible to not feel the energy the song radiates. Like many of West's other songs, it is certified five times platinum.
4. "Stronger"
Stronger was released as the second single for "Graduation" with inspiration, and sampling, from French house duo Daft Punk. The song featured a very electronic and synth-filled, much like the album it endorsed. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 weeks after being released. The song gave Kanye another Grammy for best rap solo performance. West tells the story of a night on the town with the girl of his dream. The song's powerful beat and flowing verses make it a staple in Kanye's discography.
3. "Power"
Power is a track that hits you like a semi. This will be on workout playlists for the next 25 years, at least. The drum beats it hard and Ye hits just as hard. The song was the lead single for "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" and debuted at 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Power received rave reviews from critics right off the bat. West himself claimed that Power took 5,000 man-hours to create, but it truly shows in the beautiful production and vocals.
2. "We Don't Care"
This was Kanye's first actual song on his debut, and man did it show his potential. The song features a very simple but effective beat that allows Kanye to flaunt his rap skills. West spends three verses cleverly talking about the different struggles faced by people in ghettos. He most heavily focuses on drug-dealing, but even mentions working insane hours on jobs, cheating on taxes when possible and facing the struggles like loss of utilities and proper education. But the hook always comes back to the easy-going lyrics sung by a chorus of children. An instant classic that is always a reminder of how much West has dealt with in life to get to where he is.
1. "Runaway"
Kanye's masterpiece. One of the best songs ever. Period. The song opens with one note and escalates as a beat lifts the piano riff to a new level just to undertone West as he reflects on his failed relationships and trouble with the media's perception of himself. The song's sincere topic is very evident as you can hear the pain in West's voice. The song concludes with an epic instrumental that is every bit as compelling as the verses. Runaway solidified Kanye as the greatest rapper on Earth from 2004 to 2010 and if his new album features any songs similar in power to Runaway then West's long-awaited album will be another classic to add to his incredible collection and make his future top ten lists even harder.
