In the past thirteen seasons, Shonda Rhimes has made us cry tears of joy and of sorrow when it comes to the intricate details of the lives of the doctors, nurses and patients at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. There have been countless times where viewers have almost drowned themselves in their own tears. From deaths and divorces to marriages and new life, there have been plenty of moments we all want to remember from the past thirteen years. I have composed the ten moments that made us grieve the most.
P.S. Can anyone listen to "Chasing Cars" without sobbing uncontrollably? No? Me either.
10. Christina’s ectopic pregnancy.
In season two episode three, "Make Me Lose Control" we see Cristina collapse in the OR. Unfortunately it turns out that she loses the baby she is carrying.
“Somebody sedate me!” Someone bring me the Kleenex…
9. Meredith declaring her love for Derek.
“Pick me, choose me, love me” says it all, right?
8. When Meredith realizes it was George.
I think we all remember the bus that took George O'Malley from us when he heroically jumped in front of it to save a woman on the street. But, when John Doe (George) came in, he was completely unrecognizable.
When he wrote “007” in her hand, my heart shattered.
7. April and Jackson losing Samuel.
The death of their little “Buddha baby” was almost impossible to watch.
6. When Derek was shot.
I don’t know which was worse, him being shot or Meredith kicking, screaming and fighting to take the bullet instead of him.
5. Callie saying goodbye to Mark.
I wanted Mark to pull through; I wanted Sofia to have her dad. Callie saying goodbye to her child’s father was unbearable.
4. The plane crash that ruined literally everything.
From Arizona losing her leg to Lexie’s death and Meredith not being able to find Derek, that plane crash took a little from all of us.
3. Speaking of Lexie’s death…
Mark’s heartbreaking plea to her to stay alive because they belonged together, we hoped and prayed for Lexie to pull through!
2. The death of Denny Duquette.
This episode absolutely wrecked me. Denny is still one of my favorite characters to have ever been on the show, and definitely my favorite patient. The sobs that came from Izzy still haunt me a little!
And, of course the number one spot goes to…
1. Derek’s death/the end of Mer-Der.
The fact that Derek died because of a wrong call from the team of physicians on his case enraged millions of viewers around the world. Listening to him narrate his own struggle invoked a level of sadness no one knew could come from a TV show.
