1. You've learned something!
In a day and age where technology can do it all, we need things to constantly push our cognitive capabilities. Carpentry takes precision, absolute focus, and dedication. These skills will not only get you through your project, but you can also utilize them in the real world. Every employer is looking for these qualities in an employee. Show your employer that you can finish a project without coercion. Take a day, do some research, and just go out and give it a try! It will take time to figure everything out, but by the end you'll have a new skill to toss in your toolbox.
2. The ecstasy of accomplishment.
Personally, I can't imagine a better feeling than finishing a tasking project. Every time I finish a table or a bench, I look at it and think, "This was all me, and damn it feels good." Sitting in a chair you've designed, cut and sanded with your own hands just adds an extra level of comfort that no store-bought chair can compare to! If you have a bad day, start cutting up some wood and drilling into it, and then tell me you don't feel better.
3. DIY just looks better.
If you put the time and effort into finishing a project, then it WILL look better. Manufacturers don't care about the product they're slinging, they're just trying to get as many out as possible. Sand the edges, stain the wood, and carve into it. It's yours! You can design it to fit your home exactly. I have spent countless hours trying to find the perfect piece of furniture to fit my home. I have to consider size, color, and design style. When you're making the piece, you can include all of these aspects into your design. I'm not saying store-bought furniture should be shunned – it has its place. I don't particularly want to build my own bed! (Actually, that's not a bad idea.) You get my point though!
4. You won't be alone.
It's understandable that learning something new can be intimidating, especially carpentry. Learning anything can be difficult, and you'll need help. The best part is there are carpenters everywhere!
