The NFL season is upon us once again, and after a long and dreadful wait, we can once again see our favorite athletes and teams in action.
To honor and celebrate this new NFL season, I have decided to name my top 3 players at some select positions as rosters currently stand for the 2016 season.
Quarterback:
1. Cam Newton
Cam Newton is one of the most physically gifted quarterbacks out there, and the bottom line is the man can do it all. Much like LeBron James, Newton uses his physical tools and prowess to beat your defense in a variety of different ways. He's tall enough to see the field clearly over any lineman on the field, strong enough to run the football with authority, and he's even fast enough to break away for a big run on occasion. The only thing you can hold over Newton might be his awareness issues, but other than that he looks like he was built in an NFL superlab.
2. Aaron Rodgers
The captain of Green Bay comes in at number 2 on this list. Like Cam Newton, what makes Aaron Rodgers so difficult to stop is that he's mobile without surrendering throwing power or accuracy. The man has the weapons around him to make him one of the top 3 players statistically year after year, and it seems he's always calm and collected when the chips are down to win a game.
3. Tom Brady
You might hate Tom Brady, but you have to respect what the man has accomplished. One of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the league, Brady has won at the highest stage not once, not twice... not three times... but FOUR times. He's one of the best quarterbacks because of his football smarts, and the fact that he can lead your team to victory from the first snap to the very last. He is one of the best at adjusting the play and reading the defense, and when he has the weapons that he has at his disposal, he's going to dominate not only the stat sheet but the game as well.
Running Back:
1. Adrian Peterson
You don't get the nickname "All-Day" by running the football without some passion. Peterson is as athletic and powerful a runner as they come. Standing 6'1 and 217 pounds, Peterson is built to run the ball with breakaway speed combined with bone crushing power. What makes him one of the premiere backs in the NFL is that he is a three down back, with an ability to hurt you running, and catching the football as well. Look for him to break some more records before he retires, maybe with a Lombardi trophy coming his way soon..?
2. Todd Gurley
Gurley is the second coming of Adrian Peterson, and the fact is that this kid might turn out to be better than Peterson himself. Drafted 10th overall by the at the time St. Louis Rams, Gurley missed most of last preseason recovering from a previous injury he had sustained in college. After much anticipation, Gurley showed the football world why he was taken so high in the draft despite his injury. With great size for a running back (6'1, sound familiar Viking fans?), Gurley broke into the scene his first year by earning offensive rookie of the year honors. He has the physical tools everyone loves in their running back. Look for Gurley to continue to shine this year behind a tough Rams offensive line.
3. Le'veon Bell
Although Bell is listed at 6'1, he is a different mold from the top 2 running backs on this list. Known for his impressive speed and between-the-block running, Bell is one of the most dangerous running backs out there. Combine this with the fact that he is one of the best receiving backs in the league, and you get a dangerous player with big-play ability on any given night.
Wide Receivers:
1. Julio Jones
I don't want to hear it Pittsburg fans, I simply don't. I know I'm going against the favorite option here by not picking Antonio Brown, but hear me out. Julio Jones became the best and most complete receiver in the NFL the second Calvin "Megatron" Johnson retired. In this list of players, we are talking about physical tools and overall impact on their team, and the fact is that Julio has everything you would want in your 1 receiver. Coming in as one of the tallest remaining receivers at 6'3, Julio is also known as one of the most polished blocking receivers our there. Not to mention he always seems to be at the other end of a big time throw from Matt Ryan. Look for the Falcons offense to come alive this year with Julio hitting the prime of his career.
2. Antonio Brown
Here you go Pittsburgh fans, happy now?
Antonio Brown was arguably the best receiver last season stats-wise, and therefore there is little chance I could rank him lower than #2 on this list. Possessing elite route running ability, Brown is known for his precision cuts and impressive stopping time. He is also known for being dangerous after catching the football. Look for Brown to continue to tear up the league as the first option in a pass-happy offense in Pittsburgh.
3. Odell Beckham Jr
I know many people don't like him, but what Beckham has done in his first two seasons in the NFL has been nothing short of spectacular. The man with the iconic catch in a game against the Dallas Cowboys has the most receiving yards in his first two seasons of any receiver in NFL history, and there's little denying he is the real deal. Standing a somewhat small 5'11, Beckham brings shiftiness and creativity after the catch which makes him a tough cover for any corner out there. But what makes Beckham so great is that he has breakaway speed and is one of, if not the, best route runners out there. His big hands are also great for some highlight reel catches as well, so what's there not to like with this guy?
Cornerback
1. TIE: Richard Sherman/Darrelle Revis
The top 2 corners are great at their respective fields, embodying what it means to be a complete corner. Sherman is a long, strong, and vocal leader on the field. He is constantly up in your business, and his coverage skills are elite. What makes him great is that he can not only match up 1 on 1 with any receiver in the league, he also excels in the zone defense scheme he was put on in Seattle. Darrelle Revis is a different and familiar story at the same time. Not possessing some of the physical tools that Sherman has, Revis has to make up the difference with uncanny football smarts and instincts, as well as elite agility and speed. He is known as one of the best corners when it comes to man to man coverage, and rightfully so.
2. Patrick Peterson
If you were to somehow take the physical tools of Sherman and mix them with the football instincts and speed of Revis, you would probably get something like Patrick Peterson. An elite corner with the Arizona Cardinals, Peterson can play you man to man with a relentless pursuit and drive. His knack for being at the right place at the right time makes him one of the most dangerous corners in the game. Arizona built a defense with a mean secondary, and Peterson is the obvious leader of that squad.
3. Chris Harris Jr
An up and coming corner is my selection here. A member of the Superbowl winning Broncos, Harris Jr is a fast and talented corner. In my opinion, what makes Harris special is his ability to TACKLE. He is one of those guys I could see playing the linebacker position if he wasn't so darn fast at the same time. We can safely say that the Broncos are pretty darn good at every level, and Harris is one of the reasons they will stay relevant for the foreseeable future.
