I know that people talk about Netflix all the time, and that you’re probably tired of hearing what Netflix shows to binge-watch constantly. My list is going to be, hopefully, a bit different. I’m going to be talking about the shows that I can’t believe I’m so far behind on while everybody else has already finished these shows. I think, for me, part of the problem is that I grew up without ways to watch television regularly so I just sort of forget T.V. shows exist. I don’t really know much about the industry and there are so many shows that I’m interested in but never get around to watching. As a bonus, I’ll put on this list what I’m actually watching right now.
5. Daredevil
The Marvel universe is so expansive that at this point it’s been producing its own television series for Netflix. Last year I finished Jessica Jones, which was absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately I don’t know much about the Daredevil storyline, but since it’s Marvel, of course I’m going to watch this.
4. The Magicians
The Magicians is actually a show based off of a trilogy of novels written by Lev Grossman. The second series of this show is airing on television right now but the first season is on Netflix and this series has been on my radar since the books were released. I still need to read them. What I’ve gathered of the plot is basically that The Magicians is an adult Harry Potter. I don’t really want to know much else about this series going in.
3. Peaky Blinders
I actually watched the first episode or two of this last year but school and life got in the way. Again, I don’t have a solid synopsis of this show but what I gathered from the first episode was that it’s historical fiction that’s centered on gambling. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it so this could be completely wrong. What I do remember is how well filmed it was and I am eager to keep watching it.
2. Stranger Things
I really want to watch this show just based on the hype surrounding it. I’m going into this one completely blind because I find (this is the same for books) that I enjoy a story more if I don’t know much of the plot beforehand. I feel like all I really need to know about this show is the character Eleven anyways. I’m excited to watch this!
1. A Series of Unfortunate Events
I can’t believe it. It’s finally here. I can’t wait for a day when I have nothing to do so I can just sit and watch the whole thing from start to finish. I’ve been looking forward to this show for so long and the praise it’s getting just makes me even more excited. I was a huge fan of the A Series of Unfortunate Events books when I was in high school and I absolutely cannot wait to watch this.
What am I watching now (bonus!)?
Good Morning Call which is a Netflix original series that was based off of a manga series. I have watched the first six or so episodes and I love this show because it is so nostalgic for me. I’m getting so many shoujo manga vibes and I can totally pick out the places where it would have been a manga before. At this point, when I’m not watching this show I can imagine it being laid out in comic panels. The basic premise is that it’s a romantic comedy about a girl named Nao Yoshikawa who moves to the city in order to get away from her home in the country. Due to a scam she has an unexpected roommate, the most popular boy in school, Uehara Hisashi. From there, antics and uncertain hearts ensue. I am absolutely addicted to this show. I think it’s mostly the nostalgia factor but its also really well acted and directed.
These are the shows I want to get to this year when I’m not drowning in schoolwork or trying to catch up on the hundreds of books I need to read.
