Thank God for this amazing digital age that our generation gets to live in because it makes it that much easier to stay in contact when you are away at college. That being said, it also makes it easier to rely very heavily on one person. For some this might be a boyfriend, sibling or maybe your best friend from home. However, the person I need to rely on is none other than my mom. Being away at school, I find myself calling her for anything from questions that I should already be able to answer to my own life advice. If you're like me, and the many other young adults that rely on their moms, then you too might have called your mom for these five reasons.
1. How do I do my laundry?
Now, personally I have been in charge of my laundry since eighth grade, when I declared that I was an adult and they do their own laundry. Sometimes, I still need to call my mom to find out how to wash special things like blouses and delicate sweaters, but for the most part I can handle it. However, I remember during the first few weeks of freshman year hearing many of my floor mates calling their moms (almost in tears) because they simply had no clue how to do their laundry. They didn't know which pieces went together or how to decide the temperature of the water.
2. Mom, am I sick?
Of all the questions I ask my mom, this is the one that always seems to make me feel the most like I am back in elementary school. Except now, instead of coming into my room with a thermometer and a flashlight to look at my throat, I am forced to send her very zoomed in pictures of my tonsils with the flash on. Even at almost 21, I still cannot decide if I should see a doctor without my mom agreeing that I am sick too. She's a hairdresser, but my mom has always been the best doctor in my eyes.
3. What kind of _____ do we use at home?
You can fill in the blank for this one, since it could be anything. Your mom has been buying everything from cheese to tooth paste for you since before you could remember, and now they just expect you to know what to do when you get to the grocery store. Personally, I had no idea what kind of toilet paper to buy. You might laugh, but this is a very important choice, and using the wrong kind of TP could leave you in a bad mood for the rest of the day.
4. I am out of money and I don't know what to do.
While I would never endorse relying on your mom to support your Starbucks and shopping habits, this might be a real dilemma that you would call her for. I have an online shopping habit that cripples my bank account, and without my mom's sound advice of cutting back on the spending and stocking my fridge with food I can make on my own, my bank account might just dip into the negatives. Then I would have to call my dad.
5. I miss you.
Honestly, of all the reasons you might call your mom, this might be the one that you are the most embarrassed about. You're supposed to be this tough college kid and don't want to admit that you are missing home a little bit. But if I could give even the smallest bit of advice to incoming college freshman, it's that they miss you just as much as you miss them. Heck, they might be missing you more, but they don't want to make you feel bad. So, never be ashamed of calling your mom just to say, "I miss you, and I love you." This will probably make her day.
