I was watching "Interstellar" the other day with my roommates and I was truly blown away by a number of special effects used. In today’s day and age, a movie almost HAS to have a couple big names in the cast and a really large budget for it to be considered a modern classic or a big buck blockbuster (for example, every Marvel movie ever). This got me thinking about the good ol’ days when movies were all about the plot or the message and weren’t filled with rampant graphics and an all-star cast. Here is a list of movies that take us back to a simpler time where movies were judged by their fantastic acting, an intricate storyline and spurred some consistent chuckles.
1. "Back to the Future"
This movie initially brought upon great expectations for the year 2015. (and we were all disappointed because what we have today are NOT hover boards) but it features Marty McFly and Doc Brown as they take on the perils if time traveling. A must-watch film that pioneered the concept of time travel and Sci-Fi comedy.
2. "The Goonies"
The first time I saw this movie was in my 6th grade math class, a couple days before summer vacation started. Ever since the first scene, this movie remains one of the most quotable films with some of the funniest characters that my 11-year-old self can recall.
3. "12 Angry Men"
As someone that wants to be a future lawyer, my worst nightmare would be to have a jury that resembles anything like these 12 angry men. A must-watch where a group of men do everything they aren’t supposed to do without even knowing each other’s names.
4. "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
Tis but a scratch! This Monty Python classic was a combination of clever humor and hilariously quotable lines, making it a fantastic movie for all ages.
5. "Dr. Strangelove"
I can still imagine my high school history teacher trying his hardest to hold in his chuckles so that we can understand this movie and it’s dark humor. This satire on the nuclear missile crisis makes it one of the smartest movies of its time and it’s quotable dialogues makes it a classic satire.
