Do you remember when the last week of summer was marked with anxiety and the deepest feeling of melancholy? As college students the end of summer comes with a completely different set of emotions. Mostly those that are synonymous with joy and excitement. There is some semblance of anxiety though, but it’s only related to the outfits that are going to be worn during the first week of classes and parties.
This summer was filled with cropped tanks, Brandy Melville ruffled shorts, rompers, and Converse high-tops, but these summer staples don’t exactly transition to campus life that seamlessly. So it’s probably best to retire them to the bench until next season. The Fall 2014 runways showcased looks that take a very different approach. Muted colors, chic, and a little bit sporty, this season— and semester— are about finding key pieces and pairing them in a new and unique way. There are five pieces that I believe are the staples of this season and hopefully they can find a way into your closet without breaking the bank.
Five Essentials for Fall 2014
1. The Western Bootie
This style of bootie is categorized by a slight heel and hits right at the ankle bone. It easily transitions from day to night or casual to slightly dressy. I think it looks best when paired with a pair of light wash skinny jeans, collared white shirt, and sweater for day or a maxi skirt for nights out. Check out ASOS.com for affordable options, while splurge-worthy pairs are available at Madewell and Calypso St. Barths.
2. The Patterned Blouse
The flannel has been a very popular item for years now, but it is time to retire this wardrobe staple and make room for a more elegant model. This blouse comes in fresh cottons and luxurious silks. It looks fantastic when layered or on its own and can definitely make an outfit. Equipment (available at Hampden Clothing) is quite pricey, but the blouses are perfection and will last forever. But don’t fret if you cant afford this particular brand. This style is available at JCrew, Forever 21, and H&M.
3. The Oversized Wool Coat
Tomboy elements are always sexy and this roomy coat is no exception. Single breasted with one button it can be easily thrown over anything and adds a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to any outfit. Save this item for when the weather takes a turn for the cold, though. Nothing is more weird than that girl dressed for winter when its still 100% humidity out. Free People and Urban Outfitters both have an affordable option available online.
4. The White Lace Dress
Chic, understated, but incredibly glamorous, a white lace dress is perfect for fall. Paired with a leather jacket and simple heeled sandals it reads as badass rather than wedding-ready and could just be the perfect option for first semester formals and fancier nights out. This is a piece that can be found at almost any price point, but nicer forms of lace tend to be expensive. Stone_Cold_Fox and For Love & Lemons are two brands that do lace just right and I recommend that you check them out ASAP.
5. The Silk Trouser
Fashionable sweatpants were all the rage last year, but like most things from last season, they’re being retooled in a more formal style this year. That’s where the silk trouser comes in. Either drawstring or with a classic button closure, these pants are the perfect solution for Sunday brunches or nights on the town. When paired with a simple cotton tank, rosary-style necklace, and flats they can even be a going-to-class option. Check out Revolve Clothing and Anthropologie to find your perfect pair.
Summer is over, but that’s no reason to panic. Fall is fashion’s favorite season and this year will be horrible for the bank, but fantastic for your wardrobe. So happy hunting and may the odds ever be in your— budgets —favor.
