It’s common knowledge that the go-to activity during the holiday season is to watch Christmas movies. It doesn’t involve moving or physically exerting yourself, you can eat at the same time, and it’s relatively inexpensive, catering to all those broke college kids out there.
ABC Family has come out with their 25 Days of Christmas Guide, and the Hallmark Channel’s got their own Christmas gig going on. But if you’ve exhausted all of your readily available cable options, here are some more Christmas movies to satisfy your craving for warm wishes and cheer.
1. "Elf": A charming story about a man who was raised in the North Pole, "Elf" reminds us of the child inside every one of us. Buddy is innocent and full of joy, and teaches us all that it’s OK to be a little silly and carefree. Sometimes, your good spirits and holiday cheer may even rub off on everyone else around you.
2. "A Christmas Story": A traditional classic in the world of holiday movies, "A Christmas Story" is often forgotten among the younger generations today. Ralphie Parker just wants his Red Ryder air rifle for Christmas and to steer clear of the school bully. Between his crabby father and his sweetheart of a mother, we follow Ralphie’s days leading up to Christmas, and hope along with him that all of his wishes come true.
3. "Die Hard": While it’s not the most conventional of Christmas movies, "Die Hard" is most definitely an action-packed Christmas movie, but Christmas movie nonetheless. A New York City policeman, John McClane, just wanted to see his daughters and his wife on Christmas Eve. Instead, his holiday plans are interrupted by a group of terrorists and a Christmas party gone wrong. "Die Hard" is exciting, toe-curling, and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat!
4. "Love Actually": If you’ve ever seen "Valentine’s Day," "New Year’s Eve," or "He’s Just Not That In To You," you’re going to love this one, as well. Similar to all the other movies, "Love Actually" combines a number of different plot lines, focusing on different main characters that all eventually come together to share and show the complexities and happiness associated with love. This one will have you smiling along, and hoping to spend more time with your loved ones!
5. "Home Alone": Another classic in the world of contemporary Christmas movies, "Home Alone" is heartwarming, funny, and never gets old. Kevin McCallister just wanted to be recognized by his extremely large family, and surprisingly finds himself home alone one morning when his family accidentally leaves for vacation without him. Watching an eight-year-old take on two full grown thieves with an array of household items is one you won’t forget!
6. "Harry Potter": Another movie that’s not usually lumped in the category of holiday movies, we still have to admit that there's something inherently heartwarming and family-oriented about any of the "Harry Potter" movies. This may be because they’re usually both action-packed and touching, constantly proving the power of a friendship, family, faith, nobility, and love in one another.
