The brilliant and juicy gems of San Diego.

Top Burgers in San Diego: Part 1
IC: Homero Carrillo

I remember back when I was five or six years old when I was first exposed to a burger. I can honestly say that I've grown to the point where I can fully appreciate the unique characteristics of burgers. Thus, it helped inspire me to go out and venture to what can be considered the best burgers in San Diego. And if that wasn't enough they have a great bang for your buck. With that being said, here are three of the most mouth-watering burgers in San Diego County and where to find them.

1. Kono's Cafe -- (Operating Hours: 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.)

Located near the heart of Pacific Beach, it is famously popular for its simple concept: "High-quality breakfast and lunch at a low price." And, it does a fantastic job by serving surprisingly large portions for its patrons. This is no exception for the burgers that they make. The average Kono Burger is made with half-pound patties and your typical lettuce, tomato, pickles and red onions. It comes to a total of $6.50 if you would like to add cheese to your burger. Unfortunately, the fries are separate but only cost $1.95. Purchasing both would result in a burger meal that's below $10 (that's including taxes), which is incredibly rare to find. Personally, I savored every bite of that burger, as it was cooked with the kind of care and quality that would make any burger enthusiast to feel fortunate to stumble across this gem.

2. Crazee Burger -- (Operating Hours: Sunday-Thursday: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. & Friday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.)

Located in North Park, is a burger restaurant that gained its popularity for its use of exotic meats in burgers. However, what we'll be focusing on are the daily specials. While this meal goes on a fairly average cost, the portion and quality certainly make up for it. The are even certain dates when a regular selection of burgers are combined with either french fries or onion rings for $9.99 (without taxes). When I visited this burger joint for the first time, I ordered a Cajun Burger with fries as part of the special for that day. While it had the usual components -- lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions -- the patty itself was a half-pounder and layered in American cheese, sauteed onions and topped off with chipotle sauce. As soon as you bite into it, you'll immediately be struck with a pleasant sensation from the combination. This is a must try for those who want pay for delicious and reasonably priced burger meal.

3. Slater's 50/50 (Operating Hours: Monday-Thursday: 11 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Friday-Saturday: 11 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. & Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.)

It would be downright shameful if I didn't mention this well-known restaurant in San Diego. Located in Point Loma, it takes the concept of "Burger by Design" very literally. Slater's naturally takes the lead in the being one of the few places that offer many dazzling options for your burgers. While it does have prices ranging in the $13-$14 range (and for only a one-third-pound patty at that), it is definitely worth trying because the portion inside the burger alone makes up for the cost. It stems from its "50/50" portion, where the patty is composed of both beef and bacon. Adding anything that ranges from eggs, peanut butter, strawberry jam, bacon and honey, it makes for a burger that is just right for you.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
