There’s a rumor that Bellingham has more breweries per capita than any other city in the state of Washington.
The city is on track to have 12 breweries by February 2016, and my guess is that it will not slow down after that either.
By next year, Bellingham will have double the breweries per capita as Seattle.
Bellingham has everything from new, organic breweries to 20-year-old breweries. Whatever you're looking for, there’s something for everyone.
So what are the top three breweries to visit in Bellingham?
Aslan Brewery Co.
Perfect for adults, students, kids, and really everyone. Aslan Brewery Co. is the “pride of the organic Northwest.” All of the beers are certified organic, as well as the food.
Aslan Brewing Co. opened in 2014 by four best friends, and has quickly become one of the most popular restaurants and breweries in Bellingham. You won’t find a night of the week that Aslan isn’t bustling with customers.
Located on N Forest Street, Aslan is one of my favorite places to go with my friends on a Friday night. One of the keys to Aslan is that not only do they have happy hour from 4--6 p.m., but it starts again at 9 p.m. and lasts until close.
I recommend getting a pitcher of the award-winning Batch 15 IPA and a few appetizers to share with your friends.
Boundary Bay Brewery
Boundary Bay has been a staple in the Bellingham beer scene for over 20 years. It has less of a 'bar' feel and more of a 'restaurant' feel, which makes it perfect for a casual afternoon beer.
You will see the name Boundary Bay all over Bellingham with how much time and money the brewery donates to the city.
My favorite time of the year to go here is the summer. With the outdoor seating deck and beer garden below, Boundary Bay is the perfect spot to grab a beer with friends and family while enjoying a free concert.
I recommend the Best Bitter ESB, and really anything off of the food menu.
Chuckanut Brewery
Chuckanut Brewery is running again for the “Best Craft Brewery in America.”
It has brought European-style beer to Bellingham since 2008, and continues to be one of the most popular breweries in Bellingham.
Besides serving some amazing brew, Chuckanut stands out from the competition by its sustainability promise. The brewery has moved towards Zero Waste and uses a computerized brewery system to save electricity, water, work force, and time.
Located down by the Bay, Chuckanut is the prime location to watch the sunset over the water while drinking one of the best beers in Bellingham. I recommend the British IPA; you won’t be sorry.
