Labor Day weekend has passed and everyone is getting back into the grind of things whether it being going back to college or going from summer to fall for the work days. Either way, now that summer is unofficially over, you're going to be inside more often which means you making that binge list for Netflix. Below are some of my suggestions, spanning over multiple genres, of what to start binge-watching.
The Nostalgia Factor: Friends
10 seasons - 236 episodes
No Netflix binge list would be complete without the timeless show Friends. While this is not everyone's cup of tea, it is a classic and needs to be included. If you don't know what Friends is about, then I don't know where you've been since 1994. It's about the (mis)adventures of the loves and lives of six friends living in NYC. Despite Friends being all the rage when I was growing up, I didn't pick up this show until last year because I couldn't handle the hype and expectations. Boy, do I regret that decision as this has quickly grown into one of my all-time favorites. If you haven't seen it, watch it. If you have seen it (like eight hundred times), another viewing is just going to make it even better.
The New Kid on the Block: Stranger Things
1 season - 8 episodes
Stranger Things has been all the rage recently and one that I am currently in the middle of binge-watching as I type up this article. A mix of drama, suspense, horror, and geekiness, this Netflix-original starts with the disappearance of a young boy named Will and all the subsequent strange mysteries that emerge as a small town tries to find him. It keeps you at the edge of your seat as you try to figure out what's going on. Winona Ryder is amazing in this show and, with only eight episodes, you can watch the entire series in one day.
Sci-Fi Fun: Farscape
4 seasons - 88 episodes
Farscape was one of my favorite sci-fi series growing up and although Netflix doesn't have the conclusion of the series with The Peacekeeper Wars, I would suggest this one if you love space adventures a la Firefly and Star Trek. An American astronaut, John Crichton, is thrown into far reaches of the universe via a wormhole during an experimental flight. He ends up on a Leviathan transport ship named Moya with an assortment of unique characters and begins his adventure to find his way home. It's filled with action, drama, romance, comedy, and science: everything a geek needs over a long weekend.
Kickass Action: Nikita
4 seasons - 73 episodes
I had the pleasure of sitting in on a panel during San Diego Comic-Con 2012, prior to the release of season 3, and I was in awe with the poise and grace of Maggie Q as she talked about this show. It has been on my list since then and I finally had the opportunity to sit down and watch this show this summer. This show is amazing! Maggie Q kills it, both literally and metaphorically, as a trained assassin turn rogue who is trying to take down the corrupt, secret U.S. organization known as Division. The fight scenes are well choreographed, the character development and relationships are rich and realistic, and it keeps you riveted every step of the way.
Laugh Out Loud Funny: Scrubs
9 seasons - 182 episodes
This medical comedy-drama will have you in stitches while also pulling at your heartstrings at the right moments. The series begins with new interns J.D., Turk, and Elliot as they navigate their new careers at Sacred Heart Hospital, often butting heads hilariously with Kelso, Dr. Cox, Carla, and the Janitor while forming friendships and relationships. Later seasons see our newbies become true professionals as they train a new generation of scrubs - Lucy, Drew, Cole, and Maya. It can be very cheesy at times, but it also has its moments of being truly touching as you see these characters grow and connect.
Crime Dramas for the Win: Longmire
4 seasons - 43 episodes
This show returns on September 23rd so now is the perfect time to play catch-up. Based on the mystery novels by Craig Johnson, Walt Longmire is a sheriff in Wyoming who strives to solve crimes and keep his conflicted town in order while dealing with the pain of his wife's recent death. The show stars Robert Taylor in the titular role with the brilliant Lou Diamond Phillips as his best friend and confidante Henry Standing Bear. If you like crime shows mixed with some compelling drama, this is the show for you.
We All Scream for Horror: American Horror Story
4 seasons - 51 episodes
Netflix only has the first four seasons of this fantastic series (Murder House, Asylum, Coven, and Freak Show) and while it has its ups and downs, the show is captivating and the actors/actresses do a phenomenal job. Each season stands alone, but Ryan Murphy has recently revealed that the seasons are actually interconnected in some way. My favorite two seasons are the first two - Murder House and Asylum - due to them actually being true horror stories. Coven goes into the more mystical and magical aspects of the show while Freak Show plays on the outrageous aspects of being a traveling carnival and freak show. Each season has its own twists, turns, cringes, and jumps, but stick to the earlier two seasons for the real "keep a nightlight on" thrills.
Historical Moments: The Tudors
4 seasons - 38 episodes
If you're into period dramas with amazing costumes, brilliant character portrayals, and betrayal at every turn, you must check out the The Tudors. Starring Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as King Henry VIII, the series goes into his almost 40-year reign focusing on his relationships with his many wives (including Natalie Dormer's standout performance as Anne Boleyn) and important figures such as Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, played by Henry Cavill (yes, Superman is in this!). This, however, may not be a series for history buffs as it is riddled with historical inaccuracies. While this may be the case, it does not take away from the beautiful imagery, intricate storytelling, and complex relationship and character development.
Animated Adventures: The Powerpuff Girls
6 seasons - 78 episodes
Lighthearted, great animation, girl power, action, and cheeky comedy make this a great show to throw on when you want to just be entertained. Blossom, Buttercup, and Bubbles are the chemically engineered superhero daughters of Professor Utonium. Together, they fight crime, learn and teach life lessons, and have fun in the city of Townsville. This show was rebooted earlier this year in April, but I am a sucker for the original.
Reality At Its Fullest: Man V. Food
1 season - 25 episodes
While Netflix only has season 3 of this show up, it is definitely one that any foodie and reality TV junkie needs to check out. The series follows Adam Richman as he tries crazy, imaginative, and memorable foods, culminating with a food challenge of some sort at the end. From a 10 lb. stuffed pizza in Hartford, CT to 422 oysters in Mobile, AL, you are guaranteed to see some ridiculous food challenges and keep you both entertained and disgusted all at the same time.
Hopefully, one or more of these shows have sparked your interest and you have found something to fill up those times when procrastination hits hard. Happy binge-watching!
