This was one of my personal favorite years in the world of music. There were so many new albums released that it’s hard to choose which ones were at the top. As I get older, I find my musical choices to widen and my eyes are opened to new artists. My appreciation for music is at an all-time high.
These are my top 10 albums that were released in 2017. Hopefully, if you haven’t already heard of some of these, you will be able to get new music out of this.
10. "What Do You Think About The Car?" By Declan McKenna
If you are into indie rock with a hint of pop mixed in, this is the album for you. Declan McKenna reminds me of a more modern version of David Bowie. His songs have a psychedelic vibe to them but are great to listen to when you want a smooth jam. Some of the highlights of this album are “Humongous,” “Brazil” and “The Kids Don’t Wanna Come Home.”
9. "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1" by Calvin Harris
I have never been a huge fan of Calvin Harris before strictly because I am not a huge fan of EDM music. His earlier music just never really interested me. However, this album has blown me out of the water. Almost every song on this album is a complete hit with a large range of contributing musicians. Harris really hits all areas of music with this album solely based on his choice of featured artists. My favorite songs are “Rollin,” “Feels” and “Faking It.”
8. "Tell Me You Love Me" by Demi Lovato
This album is by far some of Lovato’s best work. If you thought her vocals were good before, just wait until you listen to the songs on this album. She really pushes her vocal limits in songs such as “You Don’t Do It For Me Anymore” and “Daddy Issues.” Each song has a personal connection to her that shines through both musically and lyrically. Other highlights from this album include: “Tell Me You Love Me,” “Sexy Dirty Love” and “Cry Baby.” If you are looking for a pop album to jam to, this is the one for you.
7. "American Teen" by Khalid
Khalid is arguably the biggest breakout artist of 2017. He has several hits and continues to grow in popularity amongst the millennial age group. His songs have pop influences but are heavily dominated by R&B effects. His songs are the best when you’re in the mood for long drives with your friends. My personal favorites are “American Teen,” “8TEEN” and “Young, Dumb & Broke.”
6. "The Thrill of it All" by Sam Smith
I wrote an entire article based on his album so obviously, it had to make this list. Smith puts a whole new meaning to love songs, especially on this album. He breaks my heart simply through his lyrics. This album also highlights his already known vocal range. Just when you think he has reached his full protentional, he sings an octave higher. Some of my favorite songs from this album are “One Last Song,” “Palace,” “No Peace (ft. YEBBA)” and “Nothing Left For You.”
5. "DAMN" by Kendrick Lamar
This may be the top album of the entire year voted by the critics. If you haven’t heard of this album, you have at least heard of Kendrick Lamar. This album is full of awesome beats, slick rhymes and Lamar’s outstanding storytelling ability. He does a great job at creating a hit while also conveying a message. Some of my personal favorites are “ELEMENT,” “LOYALTY (ft. Rihanna)” and “LOVE (ft. Zacari).”
4. "Flicker" by Niall Horan
I’m going to be honest when I say I was surprised with how good Horan’s first album was. I am a die-hard One Direction fan so I was expecting a little more than his first single “This Town.” I wasn’t a huge fan of it at first. However, that first single did not do the rest of his album justice. Horan kept his pop roots but also added a lot of folk-rock to his songs. I loved hearing his acoustic guitar in almost every song. Highlights from this album are “Seeing Blind,” “Since We’re Alone,” “One the Loose” and “You and Me.”
3. "Everybody" by Logic
This was one album that I feel did not get enough recognition this year. Logic is a highly underrated artist and while his song “1-1800-273-8255” topped the charts for weeks, this was definitely not the only hit on his album. On this album, Logic does an excellent job of talking about real issues going on all over the world while also exhibiting a message of peace, love, and equality. This album is definitely a heavy one but also has some amazing bops. My favorites include “Black SpiderMan,” “Killing Spree (ft. Ansel Elgort),” “Waiting Room” and “Everybody.”
2. "Divide" by Ed Sheeran
Personally, I think this is Sheeran’s best work to date. This album is full of songs you can both rock out to and sit in your room and cry to. I am a huge fan of his already but I just feel like each album he puts out just gets better. He still always manages to stay true to his roots. If you have ever seen him live, you’ll know it’s just him, a guitar and a loop pedal. I love that this album is guitar-driven with a lot of folk-rock but still has its pop aspects. Some songs from this album to check out are “Dive,” “Galway Girl,” “Happier” and “New Man.”
1. "Harry Styles" by Harry Styles
Finally, my favorite album of 2017. I am certainly biased because, as mentioned before, I am a large One Direction fan, but this album undoubtedly deserves more recognition than it has received. This album has something so simple about it that almost makes it complex if that even makes sense. Styles has such a simple, wholesome voice but his lyrics are completely contrasting to that.
You can tell that each song is hand-crafted with a heavy classic rock influence. If you are looking for a good rock song, “Kiwi” or “Only Angel” is for you. If you want to cry, listen to “From the Dining Table” or “Sweet Creature.” Styles’ album does not contain songs that all sound like each other. They all tell a separate story with completely different musical vibes to each of them which is why I think this album is the best of 2017.
