I have seen a lot of comic book movies and I have read a lot of comic books. I haven't seen all of them, but I wanted to make a list of my favorites. Here is a countdown.
9. "Avengers: Age of Ultron"
"The Age of Ultron" brings new technology. AIs have been debated for awhile, and they become real in this movie. This movie is so low on the list mostly because of the compromised backstories of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. The movie brings a lot of feel good action with a good ending.
8. "The Dark Knight Rises"
Bane is here to raise hell in little ol' Gotham. Based on the Knightfall saga, Bane's goal is to break Batman and for all he stands for. "The Dark Knight Rises" shows a beautiful evolution of Batman.
7. "Captain America"
Captain America is a true fighter for America, born out of the struggles of World War II. Steve Rogers, weakling of Brooklyn, becomes part of a super soldier experiment in order to fight the Nazis. He becomes the propaganda for the US. Captain America is a symbol of purity and the will of the American Way.
6. "Iron Man"
"Iron Man" is a story about a brilliant man gone too far in the weapons business. Tony Stark is kidnapped by people who want his products. After almost dying, he must push through his selfish desires so he can help others. Iron Man has to deal with deep character flaws in order to be better.
5. "Avengers"
"Avengers" is a great team up movie. We get to see some of our favorite Marvel heroes together at last, with new addition Hawkeye. Loki, Thor's not as nice brother, brings some pretty bad aliens to Earth, and more importantly, New York City. It is a pretty long trend to have everything bad that happens in Marvel world to happen in New York City. The Avengers have been around since the 60s and it is about time that they had a good movie.
4. "Ant-Man"
"Ant-Man" is refreshing because it is a story of redemption. A lot of comic book movies revolve around the good guy being the good guy. Scott Lang, in an effort to steal so valuable tech, is challenged to become something better. Ant-Man is one of my favorite comic book heroes because so much of his work is based on science. The original Ant-Man was Hank Pym, who only became a superhero because of his amazing inventiveness and intellect.
3. "Batman Begins"
This movie shows the beginning of Batman. The Dark Knight trains with assassins in order to clean up his hometown of Gotham. He tries to balance the line between justice and murder. The Scarecrow is his foe who weaponizes fear. The Scarecrow threatens the city of Gotham, so the Dark Knight comes to the rescue.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy
"Guardians of the Galaxy" will become a classic movie. The humor brings a lighter air to an action movie. This Marvel movie exists (basically) independently of all of the other Marvel movies, because it exists in a galaxy far, far away. A talking raccoon, a kind-of talking tree, an alien hitwoman, and a scavenger make an interesting team. Far less organized than the Avengers, this team tries to take down a few big names in Marvel.
1. "The Dark Knight"
"The Dark Knight" is a truly incredible film with deep themes. The Joker is the best Batman villain there is. "The Dark Knight" helps us capture the balance between goodness and chaos, life and death. We are forced to think about how far we are willing to go for the common good. The music in the trilogy is a piece of art.
