Before coming to college, you would never think that there could be anything bad about attending the university of your dreams. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love college, but there are definitely times when I feel like I am not cut out for this whole being on my own thing. From trying to balance school work, a social life, taking care of yourself and trying to figure out where the heck your life is going, college can be very stressful. Here are eight reasons why college may not just be the best years of your life.
1. Money
I really do not think there is any argument here. I never realized how much money was actually required to live until I got to college. Also, tuition? Ha. Without loans I would definitely not be here. Debt for life!
2. Pounds on Pounds
Freshman fifteen is not a joke people. I gained weight in places I did not even know weight could go. When you finally get to be on your own I do not know why, but you want to eat everything in sight. You really cannot say no to food especially if you already have a paid meal plan. It feels like you are always eating for free, and it is so great until suddenly your pants will not button for some reason.
3. Being Away From Family and Friends
Before going to college, I never wanted anything more than to finally get out of my house and be on my own. Do not get me wrong I love being on my own, but I really never truly appreciated my family and friends until I was far away from them. They still annoy me to no end, but they got me to where I am now.
4. Relationships
One word: no. For those of you guys that are in a happy, loving relationship, good for you! If you are solely focusing all of your time on trying to be in one, stop. Stop wondering if he or she likes you, stop picturing the rest of your lives together, stop creepily stalking their Facebook pictures from high school, just stop. If you are meant to be in a relationship it will happen. Just focus on yourself, school and eat pizza. You came to college to get a degree not to wonder if they are going to text you the next day.
5. Bad Professors
If you have ever heard that professors make or break classes, that is the complete truth. Some really just do not care and some are just sick of the monotonous routine of teaching hungover teenagers chemistry at eight in the morning. On the borderline of a D or an F? You better study because a few professors love nothing more than making you retake their class again and again.
6. Stress
I never really knew what a mental breakdown was until I got to college. The back to back homework assignments on online programs that never work, the endless pop quizzes, the tests that literally do not even cover the material you have been learning and lack of sleep really do take a toll on your mental health.
7. Exhaustion
The amount of sleep you get in college drastically drops. Whether you are tired from staying up late studying, or going out with friends, or trying to do both and wake up with half a box of Domino's pizza by your face, you are always going to be tired. I try to take a nap every chance I get whether it is in my bed or in class. I have never seen my eyes without bags.
8. Wondering Where Your Life is Going
Most of us coming into college have a dream job, or know what we are going to major in. Then all of a sudden you realize that you actually hate your major, and now have no idea what to do. Knowing what you do now affects the rest of your life is a nightmare. How are we supposed to choose what we are going to do for the next fifty years of our lives if I can barely do my laundry right?! I am hoping one day it will just hit me, but until then I will have my mental breakdowns occasionally.
