Have you heard? There are multiple rumors circulating the student body concerning not only the upcoming Fall 2015 semester, but the future of Northwestern State University as a whole. Now, rumors are just that, rumors, but occasionally there can be some truth to them. These are the top 8 in no specific order:
- Beer will be sold at football games. In the past, Northwestern has been a dry campus, but with the new president wanting to expand horizons, that may change this fall. There has been talk of Dr. Henderson looking into acquiring the permits in order to sell and drink beer at football games.
- The Alley will be opened as a bar on the first floor of the student union. Ever heard of the Alley? It used to be a premier event space for students on campus. After leaks and structure damage shut it down, it has just sat abandoned. With the possibility of NSU becoming a "wet" campus, this could allow for the Alley to be re-opened. It has already been circulating that there has been construction efforts to renovate the space to prepare it for re-opening.
- Dodd Hall and Varnado Hall will be used or torn down and replaced. If you haven't noticed, there are a few buildings on campus that aren't used at all. Dodd Hall, for example, is used by the Natchitoches Police Dept. to train the S.W.A.T. team. Why are these buildings not used? The real answer is unclear, but there has been talk that within the next couple of years there are either plans to renovate and use these buildings, or tear them down and replace them.
- There are plans to fix and re-open the Natatorium. In the recent past, there was an indoor pool attached to the CAPA building across from the student union. Why it was closed is a mystery to most students and it is a part of the list of buildings that are sitting unused taking up space. If the Natatorium were to re-open, it would open up opportunities to add multiple collegiate sports to Northwestern including a swim team, dive team, water polo, and many more.
- The WRAC will be open until midnight every day except for Sunday. Who hasn’t heard someone complain about the fact that the WRAC is only open until 8 p.m.? People are saying that Dr. Henderson has listened to these complaints and starting during the Fall 2015 semester, the WRAC will stay open until midnight every day except Sunday.
- A full food court is in our future. Many have speculated that within the next few years, food options other than Sodexo will be available in Vic's, The Grill, and Iberville Cafeteria. In the past, The Grill actually used to be Chick-Fil-A. Why in the world did the delicious fast food chain abandon Northwestern? Who knows, but hopefully this rumor has the most truth to it out of all of them.
- The main building that holds classes on campus will no longer be Kyser Hall. Everyone who has ever taken a class on Northwestern State's campus has trudged up the multiple flights of stairs in Kyser to make it to class. There has been talk that there are plans to build a large universal building like Kyser over by the business building and the iconic Three Columns, shifting the main area of campus to the complete other side. Kyser Hall would then become an administrative building.
- The Student Union will get a complete makeover. If you walk into the union, you may feel like you've walked into an 80's movie. Aside from Vic's being renovated and a few flat screens here and there, there has not been a lot done to modernize it for today's students. There is a possibility that it will get improved from the inside out, starting with the student union bridge having the steps changed into a ramp.
These are all rumors. At this point there are no facts associated with them. Hopefully within the near future, an interview with faculty including Dr. Henderson will take place and confirm or deny these rumors and clear the air about the future of Northwestern State University.
