A couple of weeks ago I had the chance to see one of the bands I grew up listening to, The Beach Boys. I grew up in Peru, far from the U.S., but I still listened to this American band throughout the years of my life. I relaxed listening to "Kokomo," try to recover a positive feeling with "Good Vibrations" or just felt accompanied by the sound of songs like "Barbara Ann" or "Surfing USA."
Yet, although I enjoyed their songs I never knew anything more about this iconic band. It was after the night at the concert at Brooklyn's King's Theater (btw: one of the best concerts I've ever been to) that my curiosity for knowing more about them aroused.
After many searches in Google and after having the opportunity to watch the movie "Love and Mercy," I want to share the songs I consider the best of The Beach Boys:
1. "Kokomo"
One of their most exotic and popular songs. Watch this video and feel the breeze of the ocean.
2. "Surfing USA"
This song, in more than one generation and in many countries, represents the surfing lifestyle, that is no longer the one from the 60's but the idea of adrenaline, freedom and the contact with nature continues to be the same worldwide.
3. "Barbara Ann"
This is one of the songs included in their appearance in "Full House" back in 1998. This spontaneous contribution is a 90's jewel.
4. "Good Vibrations"
Inspired by his mother's story about dogs barking to people with bad vibrations, Brian Wilson created this song. From its release "Good Vibrations" became a hit song in the U.S. and U.K.
5. "God only Knows"
There's something in the music and lyrics of this song that from the first time you hear it you just get caught in it. Brian Wilson made this for his brother Carl to sing in the main voice. When Carl got sick he continued singing in concerts with The Beach Boys, he sang sitting on a chair and the only moment he stood up was to sing this song. Also,"God only knows" is recognized by Paul McCartney as his favorite song of all times.
